I believe it was on this forum, but somewhere I saw a recipe for a homemade spray case lube. Can anyone direct me to this or post a link to somewhere else where there are ingrediants and instructions?

From what I recall, several members said it worked very well, and I just shelled out $9.99 again for another can of One Shot and that got me thinking, I should bite the bullet and round up the ingrediantes to make my own.

Many thanks.

I found the Lanolin at a Whole Foods market and the Heet at Wal Mart.

Probably continue Imperial Sizing Wax for necking down ---
Thanks

You can use the 90% alcohol it just takes longer to evaporate.

I have been using home made case lube for years. Never stuck a case. If y'all want my recipe PM me and I'll look it up and post. 99% iso and liquid lanolin might be the ingredients. It's cheap and lasts a long time. I made up one gallon and still working on it.

Good info on making homemade lanolin lube here:
http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm#Sizing
EDITED: The mixture is best at 8 parts alcohol to one part liquid lanolin. Any ratio that uses more lanolin to alcohol is too greasy. 16 oz of alcohol to 2 oz. of liquid lanolin works well. Some report good results with less lanolin. Definitely use 99% alcohol if possible.

OK, so I need clarification. The first video says the
mix is 12 parts Iso, and 1 part lanolin, and the link to
the text says the mix is 4 to 5 parts Iso, and 1 part
lanolin. Big difference in mixing ratios! So what
are people actually using for mixing ratios? I have
also read internet forums where the suggested ratio is
8:1. So which one works for the bootleg case lube mixers
here?

Thanks

I used a 12 oz. bottle to 1 oz. liquid lanolin.

FWIW, maybe 8 months ago came home from a Lowes store with can of ULTRA LUBE, an aerosol can of lubricant and penetrant that is supposed to be a soy bean based product minus any petroleum oils. Bought it just to replace the can of penetrant I'd used up. The Ultra Lub can said it had 4 times the lubrication of oil based products. Also labeled eco safe, non-toxic, odor free.

Happen to have the Ultra Lub near me one day when I was going to resize some brass...so, being a curious guy, sprayed some on a lub pad and tried it on my brass. Stuff worked quite well for resizing brass. Been using it ever since. It replaced the Imperial Sizing wax I'd been using.

Another good post about making your own lube. Says 8 to 1 mimics the Dillon case lube which is the best lanolin lube I've used.

Hello I'm new to the forum, also not in the US, know lanolin very well, as we have plenty of sheep, but can anyone enlighten me on what Heet is. From putting two and two together it appears to be a brand name for isopropynol, but I am not 100% sure. Any help will be much appreciated.

Heet is used to remove water from gasoline in cars. We used it a lot in the winter in NY State, you just add to the gas tank. It's 98 or 99% Isopropyl alocohol if I remember correctly...

You can get 100% alcohol at a paint store...denatured or wood alcohol. They usually have it by the gallon. It's funny, reloaders have been trying to come up with the ultimate {for whatever reason, usually money} case lube for a very long time. I remember one of my brother-in-laws talking about using STP oil treatment {ala Mario Andretti} 40 years ago. I tried it once when I ran out and it did work, but it was nasty to clean up and it stunk. For days.
I always hate it when some idiot replies to a thread and starts out with "simple, all ya gotta do..." Several years ago that idiot posted to take a ziploc bag, add a few squirts of Dawn Ultra dish soap, dump in the brass and close the zip on the bag. Then roll it around to coat the brass good. Dump out the brass cases on a clean surface and let them dry. Then size. I tried it and been doing it ever since. One thing to buy, zero mixing and effortless resizing. I have formed many 243 and 260 cases from military 7.62X51 {308} cases in one pass.
In regards to Heet...that same BIL with the STP refused to buy any kind of "Dry Gas" type product to get water out of a gas tank and I remember tagging along as a kid while he went to several stores looking for 100% alcohol to substitute...for the gas he ran out looking he could have just bought the "Dry Gas." I used to think is was a Navy thing...spending $50.00 to save .50 cents. I have known many fellows that did this {drive two hours to save $4.00} and every one of them were prior Navy.

Actually, the stuff I make is better than anything store-bought that I have tried. Plus, the convenience factor pushes it right over the top. I lube a full ammo block at a time, or two blocks if I'm loading a bunch of ammo. The alcohol evaporates but the lanolin is still there, and the case neck is perfectly lubed too.

I also used Imperial until I started having to lube 1000 cases at a time.... I still have Imperial somewhere in a drawer if I ever need it again.

I now actually use both One Shot for little batches here and there but use the homemade stuff for bigger batches.

I mixed a 4oz bottle of oil to 12oz bottle of 91% alcohol. The brass seems way to slippery to where I have to wipe some off so I don't get dimples when I resize. It also clogs up in spray bottle if it sits for a few days. I don't think this is the normal. The label on the oil says 100% liquid lanolin.
When I have alot of brass to do I put it in a gallon ziplock and a couple spays of solution. When the empty bag sits for a few hours the inside of the bag is stuck to itself.

Got it corrected thanks to Furhunter,I was mixing in way to much oil.

ok guys
I have 2 questions for ya.
1. On YouTube there are two videos for the bootleg case lube
In the link above the guy is using the home health liquid lanolin pure emollient oil.
In the other the guy is using the now foods 100% pure liquid lanolin. Are these two products the same?
I can get the home health at wall mart.
By my research lanolin is a solid at room temp and the oil is not so this leads me to believe that there the same. What do you guys say or use?
2. Would this case lube also make a good water puffer for your guns when hunting in the wet
thanks in advance
Ace
P.S. oh I guess that's 3 questions sorry lol

Funny...I went to Amazon and checked out Liquid Lanolin. The most common item bought WITH the lanolin is 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. I will be making some of this for large batch resizing.

I use the lanolin spray with alcohol. I set out hundreds at a time on a towel, three squeezes, roll them around and let dry for 5 mins. Resize and done. Must easier than doing one at a time.

Then there is this post from another site:

http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=293530

"Called RCBS again yesterday, and sent them an e-mail regarding the stuck .223. Explained that out of the thousands of rifle rounds I've loaded, the ONLY stuck cases I've had have been as of very recent--when I decided to give Imperial a try."

Here is the response from RCBS--

Quote:
Hi Jeff:
Return the die to us and we will remove the stuck case and replace any
damaged components. You want to avoid lube that is wax based or has any
wax products in the ingredients. 95% of the stuck cases we get back
here are due to wax based lube.

What happens is that the wax builds up inside the die and is like rubber
cement in there and the cases will get stuck every time. Your die is
under warranty and there is no problem sending it back to us. Have a
great day!

I think the biggest problem with any lube is using too much, and not keeping the dies clean. The Lee dies I have will sometimes "plug off" the vent hole with lube. I use the lanolin/alcohol diy stuff. Just my .02

I finally tried the home made lube. I used a bottle of Heet and one ounce of liquid lanolin. Today I FL sized some 7.62 cases and ran some 5.56 cases through a 6x45 SB die. It all worked great. I can not imagine buying commercial case lube again.

Lanolin is used when making your own bullets, usually a mixture of lanolin and caster oil. Berger I think uses only lanolin. Only about 2 grains of lube is used to core seat 1000 jackets. But, it is not easily removed completely, solvent is used to clean the bullets.

If I were working on hundreds of cases at one time, I would use this spray, the small amount of lanolin shouldn't pose a problem.

I load at the range when attending matches. I use RCBS Case Lube II, water based, and a pad. I clean the case with 0000 steel wool, and lay 10 to 15 cases on the pad and roll with the palm of my hand, then resize. Wipes right off with a paper towel.

When I first started loading I tried almost everything and for case lube, finally settled on One Shot. It works great with my wooden loading blocks. The logical next step was to figure out what that stuff is made from. The lanolin & 99% ISO is a great replacement for it. I'll never need to buy more case lube and I have enough stuff in stock to make more.

one shot is not lanolin based. its Dynaglide based.

it doesnt build up like lanolin mixes do, and its nigh on impossible to over-lube with the stuff like it is with lanolin.

the ONLY time i've ever managed to dimple case shoulders was when i was testing out lanolin based stuff. plus it left a sticky mess in my dies. Yick!

i still have a bottle of lanolin based mix i keep around, but i hold onto it for resizing the .310 zmax into .308 bullets for my blackout thumbup1

The best case lube i have ever used and i have tried a hundred different store bought and homemade lubes, is plain old chapstick, hanging in every checkout counter in every store. i even made a little holder so it stands up right next to my press, take the cap off, rub 2 fingers across the top of the chapstick and run arond the case a second, i have a q-tip with some on it that i roll around in the neck of the case and in the die it goes, works everytime, no dents ever, no stuck cases ever, slides up in the die like greased lighting. Then hot water and dawn dish soap rinse and slosh and dry. My search is over, for a hundred cases you don't even use a 1/8 of an inch of chapstick, it syays on your fingers for several cases, a little on the neck, non on the shoulder and some on the case, awesome stuff, .39 cents will maybe do a thousand cases.

I started using this mixture and it works very well. I had one thing happen that was a little unusual. I had a batch of brass fresh out of the tumbler and sprayed it down with the mix. I had stuff to do so I let it set over night. The next day, I had dark stains all over my freshly tumbled brass. I ended up running it through the tumbler again to shine it back up. Other than that, it works very well.

I have found nothing better for high volume reloading.

Time saved alone regardless of money saved is worth making your own.

I recently tried the lee paste in alcohol. It does separate, but a quick shake is all it takes. I put one tube in 16 oz. of 91% isopropyl alcohol, mix and spray onto cases. Dries kind of powdery, works well, easy to wipe off. I've processed close to 1000 cases with it, used about 3 oz. of the mixture.

The lanolin I use is liquid. There is a very small rato of liquid lanolin to 99% isopropyl. I spray the cases and seat the bullets, the spray evaporates and leaves dry little lanolin. It's good for your skin. I don't even wipe them after loading, they go in the ammo box. I never notice anything remaining on them at the range, and I go from bench to range.

coconut oil is the best use very sparingly I just lubed a thousand cases and set them aside. For sizing later. Just a drop or two on your hand. Rub hands together, roll cases between hands, Viola never a stuck case. Try it you will like it. It is about 4 bucks a quart at grocery store. it is solid to 76 degrees and then it melts. Can be used liquid or solid.

I used the lanolin mix for the first time yesterday. It worked pretty good but it was a pita to remove it in the SS media tumbler.. If anyone is using a SS media tumbler and having a tough time getting the lanolin off, try Woolite laundry detergent. My normal dawn and lemishine didn't do anything to the lanolin except coat everything in a nasty mess. I tried everything I had in the house (simple green, All detergent, dawn, and lemishine) and some helped but NOTHING worked like a little Woolite in the tumbler.

if you still have your vibratory tumbler, crushed walnut takes lanolin off brass in 20 mins, give or take.

I find the corn cob media is a bit more absorbent than walnut shell.

I don't understand the reason for making your own formula for sizing lube. Even the most expensive stuff, is it really that expensive? Is it really a better lube? How do you know?

Don Fischer ask a good point. I am a big DIY person. I make my own (alcohol and lanolin) because I use a lot of it. If I am using my Dillon's volume is king. Is it better? No idea, I know it works and does keep me from crushing cases in the progressive presses. Mentally I know if I make it I will use more and not skimp on it

I also use a film cannister with BBs in it and filled to the top of the BBs with case lube to do dip the cases in

Coconut oil is the best there is. PERIOD. Use very small amounts. Three drops on hands, rub together, Size 50 cases, no sticking no dents.

About 4 bucks a quart at local grocery store.

Lanolin oil and heet (red bottle) 12:1 ratio. Some do 10:1 ratio.

And why make it. Just like anything else because you can I suppose and a bottle of heet mix will last you for a long time...

You can buy the lanolin off of amazon and heet from your Walmart or Autozone local store too.

Great stuff...Thanks! Only issue I ran into was small dents on the shoulders, so to remedy the dents I start wiping off the shoulders. No issues after that.

I haven't used it for case lube but I know most stores with a livestock section sell gallon jugs of 99% isopropyl alcohol for $20. I forget the type of alcohol in HEET but I've used the 99% isopropyl for disolving then evaporating the alcohol back off and it works great.
