Now South Carolina: 3 Dead, 1 Wounded at Beach Motel

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Three people were killed and a fourth person was wounded in a shooting at an oceanfront motel in Myrtle Beach, one of South Carolina's most popular tourist destinations.

The shootings took place around 11 p.m. Saturday in front of crowds of tourists at the Bermuda Sands Motel along the beach's new boardwalk, Myrtle Beach Police Capt. David Knipes said.

Officers draped towels over the balcony of a breezeway just outside the doors to the rooms of the motel to shield two of the bodies from people on nearby Ocean Boulevard.

"We've got detectives working on it around the clock," Knipes said Sunday. "We don't have any suspects in custody."

Knipes would not say whether detectives have determined a motive for the shooting, but said it didn't appear to be a random shooting.

The victims were Devonte Dantzler, 21, of Summerville; Sandy Gaddis Barnwell, 22, of Summerville; and Jamie Williams, 28, of Ladson, Horry County deputy coroner Darris Fowler said. The fourth victim, whose condition is not known, was hospitalized.

Witnesses said the shootings happened after a fight in front of the motel.

"We had just come up the stairs when the guy got shot. My husband saw when he fell right in front of our room," said Megan Sloan, who lives in Salisbury, North Carolina, and was on vacation.

A police officer quickly knocked on their door, interviewed Sloan and her husband and asked them to stay in their room. They didn't realize until they turned on the news Sunday morning that three people died.

The couple wanted to change motels for their last day in Myrtle Beach.

"It scared me to death. We tried to get our money back, but they wouldn't give it back," Sloan said.

The shooting happened during the annual Atlantic Beach BikeFest held about 15 miles away during the Memorial Day weekend. Police say they typically deal with motorcycle wrecks and lesser offenses during the bike rally, but violence is unusual.

Knipes said Myrtle Beach had just two homicides in all of 2013.

I've actually stayed at the Bermuda Sands. If it isn't a drug deal gone bad then it is likely a robbery. Lot's of thug 'gangsta' characters hanging around Myrtle these days.

Atlantic Beach Bikefest is also known as Black Bike Week, an event where thousands of black bikers and their half naked females act like animals for a week. The NAACP makes a killing suing business owners who close shop for that week. Not being racist just telling it like it is.

When I was stationed at Fort Bragg we went to Myrtle beach a lot. We went unknowingly during Bikefest and the scene typical unruly drunks lining the street while people cruised up and down strip... If it was not drugs or a robbery then it was most likely just one monkey trying to establish himself as the dominant alpha male...

Just for a week?.....I'm betting it's more like EVERY week.

This happened Saturday night. There was another shooting Sunday night injuring two. Also another shooting Saturday night that injured one. There is usually more crime committed during black bike week than all the rest of the year. I lived there for 3 years. They used to have a white bike week also and usually never nothing more than maybe a couple DUI's. During black week there would be a lot of property damage, thefts, fights plus you got to see a lot of fat black women wearing thongs perched on the back of crotch rockets, (the blacks didn't ride Harleys).

Yeah, it kinda rolls that way down here during black week as well...

Quote:Dozens arrested after reports of unruly crowds on Ft. Lauderdale Beach

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A large police presence took over Fort Lauderdale Beach Monday, shutting down A1A for nearly an hour after, investigators said, hundreds of people showed up to cause violence on Memorial Day.

Pictures sent by 7News viewers showed Fort Lauderdale Police gathering on A1A to disperse those who, officials said, specifically came to fight. "It was a pretty rowdy crowd," said witness Jamar Artist. "Pretty much, like, people were bum-rushing each other, a lot of people were getting trampled on their way out."

Police said the alleged brawlers gathered at Fort Lauderdale Park and began fighting, then moved to the area of Beach Place, where the mayhem continued. "The individuals that came here today are not individuals that were coming to visit the beach or to enjoy the long weekend," said Fort Lauderdale Police Detective DeAnna Greenlaw. "The individuals that came here today came to cause a problem."

Fort Lauderdale Police and the Broward Sheriff's Office's Field Force teams made dozens of arrests for everything from fighting to drug possession. They also closed three bridges leading to the beach to help disperse the crowd.

A bus was damaged as a result of the day's events.

It is a Memorial Day that visitors who got caught in the middle of it all won't soon forget. "I just saw the crowd running, and it smelled like pepper spray," said a witness.

Investigators are trying to determine whether social media played a role in prompting the unruly crowd to meet at Fort Lauderdale Park.

Police continue investigating.
