I wonder if the black players would be penalized, they use the word more freely than anyone else?

The head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors diversity in the NFL, expects the league to institute a rule where players would be penalized 15 yards for using the N-word on the field.

John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, anticipates that the NFL's competition committee will enact the rule at the owners' meeting next month.

"We did talk about it, I'm sure that you saw near the end of the year that Fritz Pollard (Alliance) came out very strong with the message that the league needs to do something about the language on the field," said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, who is on the league's competition committee. "So we did discuss over the last three days."

We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere.

Newsome also said the committee talked about other slurs coming under any possible new rule, including homophobic slurs.

Wooten, who previously has urged all players to stop using the N-word, thinks the NFL will rule an automatic 15-yard penalty for first-time offenders and an ejection for second infractions.

"I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do," Wooten said, according to CBSSports.com. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room.

"Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."

Wooten thinks the competition committee will officially agree to the rule next month before presenting it to the owners.

"I think they're going to do what needs to be done here," he said. "There is too much disrespect in the game."

The competition committee meets for several days in Naples, Fla., next week, where they will decide what will be presented to owners at league meetings in March.

"We will now go down to Naples starting next Friday and spend more time talking about it,'' Newsome said. "We had some officials in our meeting that actually out there on the field and hear the language. We'll be able to put all that together and if there's a need to we will present something to our owners in Orlando.

"With any rule that we put into play we have to look at it from A to Z and find out any unintended consequences as much as the consequences. So, as it was stated in our meeting, there are mics everywhere, so if something has been said it's probably going to be captured somewhere. So there will be an opportunity to get it verified if we have to."

I wonder what sign the referees will use from the field to signify the penalty for the use of the word when two Black players on opposing sides square off at each other across the scrimmage line...Could get interesting...

Maybe they'll just give the middle finger. may as well for how much time they're gonna waste on ridiculous, pointless penalties. Yet another reason to justify not watching football any more.

As long as both players are Black, the penalty will be offset..

I would venture a guess it is 99.9% black on black. What is going to be the call when it is about Yo Momma did this YO Momma did that, I did this to YO Momma, YO Momma is going to do this for me. There is a lot of nasty trash talking in all sports.

Two multi millionaire gigantic men could not find an open lot and settle this out of the spotlight. I think they both wanted publicity. Hurt feelings? You got to be kidding. "We have to move forward and make sure this never happens again"

This is going to be interesting, because I seriously doubt a black player will be penalized for calling another black player the N word. So, if a black player gets by with it, and a white one doesn't, that is discrimination. However, it just don't work that way, does it?

Personally I think we should just eliminate the sport altogether... Let the billionaire owners find another tax shelter, and let the ghetto goblins find a real job.

What really gets me is that these "ghetto goblins" went to college, are millionaires, yet they still can't speak the English language where most of us can understand them.

They aren't required to speak English, in fact, to ask them to do so is racist, and that applies anywhere in life. They should be allowed to speak their lip flappin, second grade, slurred, slanged, mumbling broken English Ebonics, because it is somehow a part of their heritage, that they aren't educated enough to speak proper English.

Then we get into the no child left behind, affirmative action, gotta pass the footbal player so he can play programs, and I'm sure many are graduating with a 4th - 5th grade education.

Yet, if a white Southerner wants a Confederate flag because of their heritage, it is considered racist.

Does anyone remember the Haitian gal who testified during the Trayvon Martin trial? She testified that the "n" word no longer has the same meaning to the younger generations.

My daughter, 15 and a sophomore, attends a public high school that is 50/50 white/minority and I put this question to her to see if this was true.

Indeed, she stated that kids in high school (not my girl, of course!), white and black, freely use the "n" word to each other without conflict or fighting. Her "generation" of blacks and whites no longer consider the "n" word to be anything other than another word like "dude" or "man". Maybe this is regional?

Anyway, for those of us raised in the recently desegregated south, this sounds alien, but to them, the "n" word is no longer a perjorative and it's no longer a big deal who says the word as it's used in a non-offensive manner.

While my daughter (and younger son) clearly understand the cultural differences amongst different racial/ethnic groups, they hardly see color like those of my generation and my parents and grandparents did.
