.17 hornet or .17 HH.

A few recent posts have enlightened me to the .17 HH. Now I'm wondering if I should try to find one of these or just get a .17 hornet. I don't reload so the .17 AH is probably out of the question.

Well the .17 Hornet needs to be formed as it's a Wildcat but the new .17 HH is a factory round so that's your only choice. Plus the 17 HH is closer to a 17 AH anyway as I understand it.

I was under the (wrong?) impression that the .17 hornet was a factory round.

No your right but theres no difference between the 17 Hornet and the 17 Hornady Hornet. Hence the reason why I said if you find one, you will have found the other.

Hornady doesnt even call their own 17 Hornet the Hornady Hornet... its just a Hornet.

Ah, I see now. Lol. I been confoosed for a while then. Thanks for the info guys. Now to pick out a rifle, or I guess find one first. Haven't saw one around these parts.

Gonna be a bit, gotta save some dough first. Looking forward to getting a rifle that won't blow foxes to pieces, if I can hit em. Haven't had much luck with the rifle the past year.

ok just learned something new. I was under the belief that there was a wildcat 17 Hornet and a .17 AH. But they are one in the same I guess. Now there is the new factory 17 HH. Good to know.

I have a 17 Ackley Hornet in a Contender and I love it. From my understanding they are almost identical as far as ballistics go. It is dum-dum accurate at 100 yards if I do my part. You won't be disappointed with either.
Safe shooting

I just spent an hour doing a write up here to realize it was more of a story and didn't have any real information. My buddy and I by fluke ended up with 4 17 hornet rifles.

Savage 17 Walking Varminter
Savage 17 Lightweight Varminter
Ruger 77/17
Cz 527 American

Both the Savages had loading issues and were sent back to Savage and still are not 100 percent. They both feel cheap and are the cheapest out of the bunch. The only thing I really like is the trigger and price tag on the Savages. These were the first Savages we have ever owned.

The Ruger is obviously more expensive and the only downside to it out of the box was the 9 pound trigger that is now down to a crisp 3 pounds.

The cz looked and felt good out of the box no real complains but we also put it to a 3 pound trigger.

With all that said I may have just got lucky but the cheapest of the bunch (Savage 17 Walking Varminter) has shot side by side or better than the other 3.

If you don't mind some hiccups and the feel of a cheap rifle I would go with the Walking Varminter hands down.

I have found I like 11.5 grains of 1680 the best.

If anyone has any questions on any of them let me know.

Posted this on a fox thread but will here too.

Here's a picture of the smaller 17's from left to right 17Hornet Ackley Improved, 17Hornet or Hornady Hornet, 17WSM, and 17HMR. (WSM and HMR are rim fires)

Bullets are 25 gr Hornady, 20 gr Hornady, Berger 30 gr, Berger 25 gr, VN 20gr, and Berger 15gr.

The Hornets are great fun! I like pictures too.
