I set some coyote sets the second day of IA's season.
here is my first one

my second one on the same farm, I set close to the fence to try to avoid farm equipment, not sure if they were going to work the ground or not.
then that night we got 3" of snow, 3" did this?

lol I had to dig the second coyote catch set out of 3' of snow, I started to dig to my right, then asked Lacey where the trap was and she sniffed the snow to my left, she was right! the second set I knew was west of the first. A dog is so valuable on a trapline, in several ways, I wouldn't want to trap with out one.
This female fell for a flat set I made at a bean straw clump the combine made, between 2 cornfields, near a wetland lake.

This real nice male was snared on my favorite farm, it has more than a mile of weedy fenceline off a river, I got 6 large males and 1 female here last yr.

This is the spot I got my 60$ coyote last yr, same spot, but this time a flat set, last time it was a dirt hole set.

This large old female, biggest so far this yr, was trap smart, I usually saw one set of tracks when pulling traps last couple yrs here, I took her in a well concealed snare on a fence line,

A nice male on my favorite place

A better look at his nice fur

A nice coon I got when my 2 gdaughters were with, nothing was moving, we got this coon on last stop on our second day of the weekend. It made the girls so excited! Sure after they leave I got 3 yotes in one day!

A nice female in a flat set

same trail I snared a big old dog a few yrs back

Same farm, same trail I snared a old dog a few yrs back, big female

There are a few tracks left out where I am at, not a lot, distemper hit them all hard last fall.
I will post some more pics as they happen

Nice work! Does your dog get the critters all riled up , I'm gonna get a new pup in the next year and want it to accompany me on the line. How'd you get yours to avoid your traps?

Yep, Dany D. Rottendog found herself wearing a #3 Duke early in the season... she has managed to pay attention to where I am digging and avoids those spots now...

Oh, looks like you're doing it right RePete...

My first female got caught 5 times, in 11 seasons. first 2 cause she didn't know, last 3 cause she was goofin off,or just ran into one. This female I got now just stepped in one yesterday, she didn't like it much! lol dog being there, peeing or pooping where coyotes do, makes the yotes mad, they will check out sets better if you have a dog stinking up the place.

here is a big red dog, he is about an inch or so smaller than my biggest of my career.
i got five on 2 quarter sections a couple days ago

another female in this flat set

My dog knows what a trap is, my first one knew what they smelled like with no lure near them, this one will proly do the same.
I am averaging 40-50$ for each coyote stretched and dryed, I can handle that price!
here a female in a snare

Oops here is big red one, messed up on pics

LOL I feel your pain Fin (literally)
I run some traps on the mountain right behind my house. Well last year I came back from town one day and Sally'd somehow gotten out of the yard while I was gone. I wasn't to worried because she sticks around pretty good but when she didn't show up after a few hours I got to wondering if she hadn't gone to check the line without me so I took a walk up there. Sure enough she was laying there looking pretty forlorn in the first trap I came to. Since then she's avoided the smell of lure like the plague.

T20,,,, Nice haul and you're right about dogs attracting critters to your sets. Heck, I even use turds from my neighbors barn cats at sets providing I can find em before my dogs do,,, they seem to think they're snacks:(.

I got some time to load a couple pics, the big red one was the second largest male I ever got, the biggest was a ugly brown one, this one is red.
this big male I saw from other side of the dredge ditch, it never moved, so I told the dog to get off the atv, we crossed the steep ditch, I said to dog I won't need the .22 its dead, eyes half shut looked frosted, she went to look at it, it jumped up snapping and growling! The dog jumped a foot, I jumped, lol sure suprised me!

this old female second on this half mile, caught in flatset that was in the ground 2+ weeks, coal shale is my favorite bedding material, rain, mud, snow, thawing, freezing, still working!

Today my son in law went with me to learn how to trap fox and coyote. I sanred a coyote on the same trail as this last pic from yesterday. It chewd the 7x7 5/64 cable and was gone, I was mad and was gonna drive atv off. I had told Joe not long before that the coyote like these 60' feeder tubes to hide in in bad weather and ect. He said do you spose it went into the culvert? The trail I snared these 2 males on was right off the upper end of a tube. I figured well might as well look, I looked and yelled to Joe, bring the .22 I think he's in there! I shot him and used barb wire to pull him out. He was real big, good fur, I think he will sell for 50$ I am averaging 47.50$
Thank You Joe! I darn near gave up on him!

I just knew this spot would work, new farm, grass patch on top of a hill above the dredge ditch.
Big male coyote, I got 2 this yr that will run 2nd and 3rd biggest of my life.

nice male

big female

this badger dug a hole in just right spot, it will prevent a front on approach to the flat set

small batch I took to NWIA Fur Exchange, big red there was lowest coyote in price, $20, rest all have sold for 40-50$

medium sized female

This big dog is likely the second biggest I ever got, only one in what was looking like a hot area, next couple days will see what is there.

Man -25 wind chill bites on an atv! be nice if it warmed up a lil bit

nasty mangy female, dang it, 2 walked into this section, one stayed, hope the other is not mangy.

Big dog, 8th coyote on this small farm, dirthole made from a badger digging, sat there 4 weeks and still working in freezing, thawing, rain, snow. Coal shale, my favorite bedding material. only thing I did was flip frozen rain crust off the trap bedding material, we got freezing rain last week.

thanks!
Here is big old dog I got today, same trap as big male a couple weeks ago, or maybe 10 days ago, before snow and freezing rain and below zero temps. I had a couple 7x7 5/64 cables chewed through in last 5 days, all snares from now on are gonna be made with 1x19.

he barked at us, then challenged us, as I got trapping bag and ect ready for the remake

son of a gun, I lost one on 1x19 today, this is 3rd chew off of the cable in 7 days, dang it. I think I need to make some entanglement poles to stop it. With that stupid outdated deer stop, many are still alive over night. Thanks, I am so close to the most coyotes I caught in one fall.
This female I found in a feeder tube, I saw fresh tracks, looked in the 60' tube, shot her w/ the .22.

since the mange killed most of these 22 yrs ago, it is rare to get a fox

The 3rd mangy coyote, nasty

This big male knocked down a snare 50yds back, I thought he was gone, hiding behind this grass, whew! thought I had another chew off. I had another chew off today, same farm, 70yds from this snare.

real nice 2-3 yr old female, damaged teeth on one side, maybe one that got away before?

She was the 3rd one in this trap, so far. 3 farms gave me 8 coyotes each, 2 gave me 7, I better keep those farms!

charcoal grey coyote, male

this flat set was next to the dirt hole that took big ugly red male.
Big male, one farm I had a chew off of the snare, he died over the bank, I saw the tracks and tought now how did he do that and not get caught.

This big pretty male, I thought was gone, I started cussing out loud, he jumped up from behind the clump of grass, so glad, I got 50$ for him.

This big ld female, dirt hole set that was set 7 weeks ago, with a lil LDC added 10 days before, I wonder how good burrdocks are as insulation in shoulder fur, lol

This big female chewed a snare off a week before, she couldn't do that this time. Good thing, I was pulling the sets on this farm today anyway, so cool to catch her.

This big female, ugly color, was caught in same trap as my last fox, her mate curled up on a snow bank 30 some yds away for a while that night. he came back and missed my snares, well, next time maybe, lol

I had one snare close to a dirt hole set, I don't know if she was going to go through this gap in the grass anyway, or circling the set, no matter, 4th big female on this small farm.

Another big old dog, 6-8yrs old, I reset 2 flat sets on this location after deer season ended, I can check them from the rd. He decided it was a "Good Day To Die" lol, name of the lure, and some gland lure there too. He was longer than my stretcher, and possibly the one that just chewed off a snare 8 miles ne of there. I was expecting to snare a big male, and got the snare chewed off.
Ya, he didn't like me all that well, lol

she could only wish she was there 15 seconds. She got caught before the snow fell and it blew so hard she just curled up to stay warm, they really should not visit hills when it is windy out! lol It was maybe 25-30mph hour very cold wind.

too cold for the dog, so I let her find them on the patio.
snared it then it got a foot caught in a trap I set because one took a crap above the snare, female I think

I just set this snare the day before

Nice snare chewing male

Big dog in flat set that took 2 females, he chewed half the hair off his tail, never seen that ever before in all my yrs.

male on farm where 2 chewed snare off

snow moved coyote off the ground causing a foot catch, but because of looser deer stop he backed up and pulled free.

Big dog in flat set

3rd coyote in this flat set, not one catch in dirt hole 20 ft south of this set. 12th coyote on this quarter section

Big female, 11th coyote on this farm, her last tracks in the dirty snow

Wow nice job down there buddy!!

Do you venture east towards Armstrong?

My buddy's folks from there had a guy trap there drainage ditch for the first time ever that he recalls. And got like 4 or 5 I guess.
Just got me thinking it might be you!!!

Have you ever tried a kill pole next to your snares??

I didn't get that far, wasn't me. I used kill poles many yrs ago, they didn't work so well without a way to stop the pole from spinning, I am going to research and see what is best for next yr and see what I need to change. One farm I got 12 on, hoping for that male to get caught soon for #13
This nice male today might have been looking for the female I got yesterday here, he didn't make it far enough south-west to find where she was if he was looking for her, lol

female is first pic, messed up post
Here is female from yesterday, same farm

yup the female pee has blood in it, time for flatsets for sure. I am hoping to get that last male on this one farm, it would make 13 on that 1/4 section! most I got was 11 on a quarter, before!

wish I could, waiting to get one on this farm, #13 there if he screws up. I saw him at the hiway today, I just saw him as I drove by at 60mph he waited to cross, dirty furry turd! I might have to spot-stalk him if we get some snow cover, very few survive my spot-stalks.

Here he is, #13 on this farm! he has a pale belly like the one on the highway 2 days before, I pulled these sets.

He is just about asleep! lol

This big I mean big male was on the top of the ditch, and the last one was on the bank almost at the botttom, 20yds apart, he died so fast it didn't damage the grass, I was busy with the one in the ditch, from 15' I thin I didn't see this one til the next day.

2 big males same spot on the same night, running deer?

this nice male is the first one caught using grass as a cover bedding. The next night a female came up and missed the pan by 3-4", oh so lucky, next time!
He probably chewed the snare off 50yds away last week, he had a groove in his canine, and wore cutters. That would mean I re-caught all 9 chewed off.

He had 2 pass through wounds on hiim, the rear thigh, and over the spine on the upper chest

small male, with no tail, poor thing was embarrassed!

another was real lucky, pulled snare out with its foot, and missed 2 others somehow

I wondered why twice one or both coyotes went and looked into this culvert. I set a #3 in some grass on the ice to catch the coyote, this nice dark female came out and got caught. Coyotes wanted to eat her I bet, I hope they come back through tonight, they have been too lucky too long!

T20 I grew up in Dunnell and was wondering about the shale bedding you mentioned never heard of it. Still run around with Danny J from Dunnell.

thanks, many days I had to be back to work by 12 or 2pm. next fall I'm going to have things set up better, already got more permission. If we had normal number of pups I would be over 100 I think. I think I got 8-10 pups out of the 72, that would seem low to me.

I know how that is. I have been so busy at work this year I only got to run a dozen traps. Normally I would have 50 to 80 out. Hopefully next year will be slower at work during trapping season. That is quite a low number of pups but 72 dogs is doing pretty dang good if you ask me. Really like seeing the pictures.

I figured a normal year, not with distemper a yr before, I should have seen half of my catch as pups? maybe the big adults would have avoided sets seeing pups in them? i was suprised to see so many really big, big adults. I think I got 5 of my biggest 7-10 just this yr, and thats out of hundreds of coyotes in my career.

no, as long as you dont need to worry about things like keeping the grass up on a snare set. Cats are oblivious to traps, any added odor like coyote stuff wont matter. I have only seen cats in WY.
