New 6.5 build

I have a 6.5-284 built for shooting out to 1000 yds by Gordy Gritters in IA. 28"Kreiger ss barrel 1:8 twist in a Rem 700 laminate stock removeable barrel port wears a Leupold long range scope. I load it with Hornady and Sierra 140gin Lapua and Norma brass. As I just moved to Texas I have not had a chance to shoot the long range yet. Factory ammo is now available but its expensive. I reload using IMR 4831 and RL22. Its a short action rifle but have no problems feeding the 140 g bullets.

Jim, your feeding them out of a factory BDL Box? or a Wyatt's Box?

I sure don't see a X284 fitting the shorter M7 action. I do like the cartridge, though.

I'm thinking the 6.5x47 L is the clear front runner. Should do all I need from the short action...

Shane, Like I said before the 6.5x47L would be perfect for what you want AND will feed out of the Short Action BDL mag box and that's not going to happen with any of the others you have thought about...

Next question, how do these bushing dies work? Are they the way to go for neck sizers? I guess I get the neck specs from the 'smith and go from there?

you will want to use a good bushing die. My 6.5x47 neck tension makes alot of difference.

You can get your smith to bore out a die for you. With the same reamer.

Do I buy a die, then have him recut it? Sorry, I'm real new to this area of the game.

I use a set of Redding custom neck bushing dies. It was around $220 and then the proper titanium nitride bushing. What ever the neck is on the reamer that cuts your chamber you want to be .005-.006 thousandths smaller on your neck bushing, then you will have a .002-.003 thousandths under what your neck is after a loaded round. I am assuming you will go with a no turn neck reamer. Then you avoid unnessicary turning necks. Any smaller on my bushing and I swell necks after I seat a bullet and larger I don't get the proper tension.

Yours may be different Shane I just looked and I'm using a .290 bushing. Beanland chambered mine so I don't recall my reamer specs. Sounds like your reamer may require neck turning.

What's your loaded neck size, Rob? I'm seeing all the way up (or down?) to a .293 reamer is a no turn neck.

Ok...looking at the list again, there is a second reamer listed. It has a .2950 neck that certainly falls into the "no-turn" criteria.

And using those measurements, I'd need the same .290 bushing as you, Rob. It's making sense now! That seems like the same reamer specs Beanland used on your rifle.
