Oops my German shorthair pointer likes hunting yotes!

I went out this evening to do some chuker and quail hunting with my German shorthair Maggie. The wind was blowing pretty hard. So I didn't have high hopes for any birds. I just wonted to get Maggie in shape for pheasants. We started hiking a crp field up a few draws. It became apparent that we weren't going to see many birds because of all the coyote dens. I mean there was a BUNCH. And Maggie was acting weird! We got to the top of a draw and out jumps a big coyote at 30 yards. I filled it with federal #6s! Boy was he high tailing it with Maggie on his heels! I had to call her off, but she was pumped. After that I think she gave up birds and was hunting yotes. I don't know how to feel about that but we were both exited. I don't think that yote will last the night.

I shot and wounded a yote a few days ago, but couldn't locate it in the dark in the tall weeds he ran into. The next day I took our 14 year old German Shorthair Pointer out to track it. Right away she started a scent, and I followed her through the weeds. Daisy led me to a calf that had been born stillborn that the coyotes had dragged quite a distance and hid under a bush. I never located the wounded yote, but Daisy did pretty good. She was my daughter's dog, but she asked me to take her when she moved out of state. She had always been a house dog, but the hunting instinct in her is strong after all these years.

I would say we saw at least 50. The draws we were hiking were full of bones and dens. It will be a good place to do some calling.

Sounds like you have yourself a fine dog and maybe a hunting buddy. My Maggie is a great bird dog she is 7 years old and starting to slow down a bit. I thought it was pretty cool when I fierd the shotgun that she was going to get that yote! She has never seen me shoot at a coyote before but switched up her game after the shot. I think there was so much scent in the area that she just thought cool we're hunting dogs today! I will bring the 22-250 next time I hunt that spot.

interesting. Still trying to learn as much as I can about coyotes and their habits and habitats. Good read, thank you for posting. I really need to get a dog. It seems they help so much. Definitely have a good hunting partner with you there.

Coyote dens in October? Can you take photo's of a couple of those dens and post em here?

Over the place and while a coyote sometimes
Use an abandon hole as a den it's very unlikely that there would be 50 coyotes denned up in one small area. If there is I say grab an AR plenty of ammo and pile them up

nope cant use decoy dogs or hounds for coyotes. I believe coons and possibly bobcats are the only ones we can use hounds on ill have to check the regs.

You have to love that GSP prey drive!

Posted this a while back, but this is Scout and the coyote he first pushed out of the brush for a dose of copper coated 6's and then reflushed out from his hide (that was the end....copper coated 6's make a big hole at 20 yards).

This was NOT in Washington, but in a state that does not have such restrictive regulations.

You probably already know this but hunting coyotes with dogs is illegal in Wa. Be careful. [/quote

I didn't know that. I was bird hunting with my dog and shot at a yote that jumped out of a draw. I don't won't to get in trouble so I guess I won't take Maggie back to that spot. As far as dens go I suppose they could be other critters. I will take some pics next time I'm out and post them. This piece of property doesn't get hunted and there are 4000 cows there. The land owner said there were birds all over the hill side. So I thought I would run my dog on some birds but no birds lots of yote activity.

Just looked at the regs and it's not legal. That is my fault I guess while I'm bird hunting I won't shoot at yotes. I should have known that. Thanks for the heads up.
