Fox News confirms two gunmen in Navy Yard shooting

'Multiple fatalities' at Washington Navy Yard

DEVELOPING: At least 10 people have been shot — with multiple fatalities — at a Navy building in Washington, U.S. Navy authorities said Monday.

A Navy official said two shooters were "down" following reports of shots fired at around 8:20 a.m. at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters in southeast Washington. There are conflicting reports on the number of victims and the number of gunmen, although a federal law enforcement official told Fox News that one shooter has died. Police said as many as two additional gunmen may still be at large.

The Associated Press is reporting six fatalities and police sources earlier told The Washington Post that as many as three shooters, including one in military fatigues, were involved in the incident.

Patricia Ward, a logistics management specialist at the facility, told reporters she heard at least 7 gunshots but did not see a gunman.

“I just kept running," Ward said. "Our mission is to take care of the Navy ... After today, it’s not secure enough for me.”

Roughly 3,000 people who work inside the building have been directed to stay in place as authorities continue searching for the shooter, Navy officials said. Low-flying helicopters were spotted circling above the scene, dropping baskets to evacuate people from the complex.

The Washington Post reported that a D.C. police officer was among those injured. All were listed in critical condition, authorities told the newspaper.

Rick Mason, a program management analyst who is a civilian with the U.S. Navy, said a gunman was shooting from a fourth floor overlook in the hallway outside his office. Mason said the gunman was aiming down at people in the building's cafeteria on the first floor, adding that he could hear the shots but could not see a gunman.

Shortly after the gunfire, Mason said overhead speakers told workers to seek shelter and later to head for the gates at the complex.

Patricia Ward, a logistics management specialist, said she was in the cafeteria and heard shots. They sounded like "pop, pop, pop," she said. After a few seconds, there were more shots, she said.

"Everybody just panicked at first," she said. "It was just people running, running, running."

People who were inside the building said the gunman — described as a tall, African-American male — wordlessly sprayed fire from an AR-15 assault rifle.

“We saw him hold the rifle, and we saw him aim it in our direction,” a witness told FoxNews.com.

Another witness told WJLA: "We were looking, but he was down the hall far enough that we couldn't see a face. But we saw him hold the rifle and then we saw him raise it and aim in our direction."

Naval Sea Systems Command is the largest of the Navy's five system commands and accounts for a quarter of the Navy's entire budget. It builds, buys and maintains the Navy's ships and submarines and their combat systems.

Out of an abundance of caution, U.S. Capitol Police will conduct enhanced security operations on the Capitol Complex, although no known threat exists. Six schools have also reportedly been locked down as a precautionary measure.

White House officials, in a statement released shortly after the shooting, confirmed that President Obama had been briefed on the incident.

"The President directed his team to stay in touch with our federal partners, including the Navy and FBI, as well as the local officials," the statement read. "We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site."

More than 20 members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) responded to the scene, including the same Special Response Team that extracted the alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev from the boat where he barricaded himself following the April 15 attack.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

At least 12 killed in rampage at Navy Yard

Officials identified the gunman to NBC News as Aaron Alexis, 34, originally of Fort Worth, Texas.

cower in the corner, hide behind a door, or shoot back? how come no-one ever shoots back?
gee, let me take a guess. could this be one of those safe "gun-free" zones?

Reported he only had a shotgun then took weapons off the guys/police he shot. Its really unknown at this time 100% though.

Well let's see...

-- This one certainly makes points for Feinstein on the "All veterans are crazy" comment.

-- This one makes points for the pro gun crowd, in that it took place in DC where there is an assault weapons ban in place, where there is a gun ban in place, in a government facility where there should have been armed security, but where everyone else is deprived of their second amendment right. Even though they are soldiers in the US Military, and trained in proper handling of firearms!!

-- This one makes points for the pro gun crowd in that it proves regardless of how in depth one's background check may be, you just never know who's going to snap. One has to assume that if he was working on Naval Security Computer Networks, that he had undergone a very thorough background check. Much more thorough than any one might experience under Universal Background Checks.

-- This one also makes points for the pro-gun crowd in respect to failure of the system to lock this yo-yo up. Stress induced blackouts??? I don't think so. Absolutely no reason he should have walked on the second wreckless discharge of a firearm charge. None... Zero, Zip, Nada... Not with the prior stress induced blackouts B_S_ on his record. He should have done time.

-- This one should help the pro-gun crowd in that Obama will now want to take the military's M-16s away and give them all rainbow colored flags, and daisy's with which to defend themselves and government facilities with, if in fact he took the guard's guns.

But rest assured O is going to get whoever is responsible for this, although he still hasn't found who is responsible for Fast and Furious, or Benghazi, or half a dozen other scandals in his administration. Meaning he'll want to infringe upon our second amendment rights again to get whoever it might have been. Unless maybe he was paying close attention to that recall in Colorado the other day, then he might not make a big scene.

Isn't against the law for someone who looks like Obama's brother and is a convicted felon to possess or use any ammunition or firearm to begin with?

Another mass murderer who takes advantage of another gun free zone to wipe innocent people out who finally is stopped by a good guy with a gun....

One has to wonder what he was charged with in the previous counts. I doubt they were felony convictions, because I can't believe he could maintain his security clearance if a convicted felon.

Get off any downtown Detroit freeway exit and you'll see them...black males that stand on street corners and talk to themselves, sing and dance wildly to themselves, or gesture and make comments to passersby. Most of these people are harmless, but in my view should be treated like rabid animals...given a wide berth with no interaction if possible.

This guy gave all the signs, and I think we need to do a better job of realizing where a potential problem might just occur.

Racist? You bet, but given the plethora of these types out there, I think it's a genetic thing, what other option is there? This man should have been stripped of his clearances long ago.

I agree.

Having given this more thought... You don't suppose this contractor actually followed O and Holder's advice on not security screening applicants because it was biased and prohibited Black Males from getting jobs, do you?
