Anyone Shooting 115gr VLD or DTAC In .243 Win ?

I specifically want to shoot the 115grain bullets but can't get very good results from my 1:9" Shilen 26" barrel. Both call for a faster twist rate, 1:"7 for Berger 1:8" for DTAC. Shilen doesn't make a 1:7" so I'm looking at Hart. Anyone shooting these ? What are you using, twist, length, etc ??

Have you tried 105+/- bullets? Those should do well in the barrel you have, and if they do what is a 115 getting you that a 106 won't do?

Are you looking at 1000 yard events?

Ya, looking for the 1,000 yard mark and want to do it with the .243 Win. Always been a favorite of mine since a kid.

I have a buddy that shoots some 115's out of a 7.5" twist with pretty good results. However, check the BC's against the 105's & then subtract out for the muzzle velocity loss (the 105 hybrids actually have a better bc than the 115's). It has to be WAAAAYYY out there before the 115's are better than the 105's. Can't hardly beat the 105's in 6mm

True
I use an 8T Broughton with 115 DTAC's and they shooting great.

Wedgy, I have my 5r 700 at Hart right now getting turned into a 1&7 twist for the 243 win. I'm planning on shooting in a long range varmint bench rest comp in ridgway,PA. I have a box of the 115 detacs and berger vlds that I plan to use. We shoot from 850 out to.1000 yards. Karen said my gun is getting tefloned now and should be done around may. I'll let you know how that combo performances at the 1000 yard line.

I have a 9 twist Hart that doesn't seem to like any of the VLD's. The 95 grain or the 105's, but it does like the 105 Match. Shoots them into little groups almost all the time. When it doesn't, it usually my fault.

Finally had a chance for some load development. So far I've tried the 105 and 115 bergers, and the 115 dtac.

Tried the 115 bergers with RL25. Need to play with the seating depth some more. 44.5 looked promising however my trigger was terrible. Switched to a 40x now.

Went with 4831sc with the 105 vld, found 41.5 gr produced 2800 fps and .3" @ 100 yards. Coal of 2.835. My have another node at 43.5 but I messed the 2 shot, 1 and 3 went in the same hole. Have to try this load again.

Lastly, the 115 dtacs were 2.845" with 44 grs of h1000. My group was in the low .4s

Had a chance to get out to 850 yesterday only had enough to find my elevation. Plan to load 50 rounds of the dtacs and the 105 vlds and work out to 1000.

+1 That's exactly why I shoot 105 berger VLD's out of my 8 twist Mcgowen .243. I can't push the 115's fast enough for them to be superior to the 105's!!!

Had a chance to shoot at the four distances today. I used the loads listed above and both shot very well. I'm shooting at small silhouettes not measuring groups. However 850 is a crow, 900 is a ground hog, 950 is a Bobcats, and 1000 is a coyote sitting and howling. You pretty much have .5 moa windows to shoot at.
Bear in mind I picked the best load that grouped at 100 yards not the fastest.

Distance. 105 berger. 115 dtac
Speed. 2950. 3015
850. 20.25moa. 20 moa
900. 22.75. 22
950. 25. 24.75
1000. 27.75. 26
At these distances I felt better at hitting the targets with the 115. And I'll save the 105s for deer season. I haven't posted really good groups on paper at 100 yards, but it seems pretty easy hitting a 5" wide by 14" tall hog at 900 yards where the wind makes up for a lot of error. At this point I'll rebarrel the same round after I burn this one up. Enjoy.
