Black Gun Brass???

Only use pistol powder in pistol, and rifle powder in rifle.
never put a compressed load in. also measuring black powder
is iffy at best, it would be hard to get 40 grains of ffg in a 44/40 hull. If it's just for fun a reduced load is best anyway. like 44/40 I would use 30g ffg at most. most of the guns I have are just for looks anyway, there's plenty of modern firearms to shoot. but if you must 45/70 is fun shooting.
black powder brass is a small nitch in firearm devolvement, it's popularity is slightly below cap and ball. you can use modern powder in guns in good cond, but loads are cut to a fraction of what a modern firearm would stand, example a 32/20 would use about 3 grains of unique not 20 of bp or ffg. so be extra careful. or just stick with bees wax or paper wads.

Are you sure you've got "brass" and not steel? Steel cases are dark and almost black and are not reloadable. Check it with a magnet if you're not sure.
