.22 magnum range?

I don't know if DirtyDog was for or against the .22m but I was gonna take issue with his numbers being "off" so I ran em myself. Up front, they were closer than I thought they'd be depending on what bullet was used in the .223.

At 50 yards a 40gr .22M is roughly equal to a SPITZER 50gr. .223 at 450 yards, 100 yards = 550 yards, 150 yards = 650 yards.

But if we dump the spitzer and go boattail then the numbers look more like this:

50 = 530 yards, 100 = 660 yards, 150 = 780 yards.

So the real answer is......

The .223 at extended range is just as lame as the .22m. Go .22-250 or .243.

As I stated in my post, I was comparing a 22 Mag 40gr (most popular weight) with a 223 40gr (Vmax since it's available as commercially loaded ammo @ 3600 fps). I ran the numbers on JBM.

My point was people way overestimate the mighty 22 mag, and way underestimate the lowly 223.

If you are stuck with 22 mag like we are for 2/3 of the season, you might want to look into the newer 22 mag "self defense" loads made for short barrel handguns. The velocities out of a 22-24 inch rifle tube are several hundred fps faster than the standard CCI from Wally World. Hornady, Winchester and CCI/Speer are making sd rounds for sure, there may be others.

My go to 22M loves the CCI gold dot SD ammo and groups it under an inch @ 100. I took several fox with that load this year including one grey @ 75 yds that was hit at the base of the neck and exited his azz. That said I still lost one yote this year with the same load. As said before shot placement is everything.
