US to Send 20 Fighter Jets to Egypt Despite Turmoil

The U.S. government will give Egypt 20 F-16 fighter jets with delivery to start in January as part of American aid to that country despite President Mohammed Morsi's power grab and ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The jets are part of Egypt’s $1 billion U.S. foreign aid package, with the shipment dating to a 2010 order when Hosni Mubarak was still in power that has been kept in place since his fall and Morsi's election, reported Fox News.

The $213 million order was approved by Congress in 2010, with the first Lockheed Martin-constructed jets due to arrive in Cairo on Jan. 22. The new F-16s will join a fleet of more than 200 fighter planes mostly bought and built by the U.S.

"The U.S.-Egypt defense relationship has served as the cornerstone of our broader strategic partnership for over 30 years," said Lt. Col. Wesley Miller, spokesman for the Pentagon. "The delivery of the first set of F-16s in January 2013 reflects the U.S. commitment to supporting the Egyptian military's modernization efforts. Egyptian acquisition of F-16s will increase our militaries' interoperability, and enhance Egypt's capacity to contribute to regional mission sets."

Delivering the planes as ordered to a different Egyptian leadership has been questioned by leaders and analysts because of the recent uprising resulting from Morsi’s dictatorial power grab last month.

Among the concerns is an overreaction by Egypt over issues with Israel — given the Muslim Brotherhood’s history in the Middle East — and that American built military hardware could be used against the Jewish state or worse.

“The Obama administration wants to simply throw money at an Egyptian government that the president cannot even clearly state is an ally of the United States,” said Florida Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinenthe Republican chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

And Malou Innocent, a foreign policy analyst at the Cato Institute, pointed out that if the tumoil in Egypt result in another war with Israel, the United States would be "in an embarrassing position of having supplied massive amounts of military hardware … to both belligerents."

Rand Paul purposed an amendment to the Veterans bill that would cut the foreign aid to Libya, Pakistan, and one other country, to the tune of 4 billion dollars. With that 4 billion, 2 of it would have gone towards the debt, and the other 2 would have went to veteran affairs. Which was 10x the purposed amount of the original bill.

He filibustered until he got his vote.

It was voted down 93-7.

Neither the democrats, nor the republicans give a [beeep] about the debt, nor our veterans. Giving money to our enemies is ritual for both sides of the isle.

Egypt , run by which ever terrorist group finally comes out on top will no doubt, like the rest of islamic nutcases will join in the movement to wipe Israel off the map. It should be a little easier now with 20 more American supplied fighter jets. How is that for a Christmas present to the jihads from O? I hope no one has any doubts about O's foreign policy now.

They could disarm the middle east, legalize love affairs with camels and goats, toss christianity out the window entirely, tell the local tofu barn they have to post calories on all menu items so people can make a more informed decision when they go to eat fast tofu, outlaw diesel engines less than a week old, outlaw sand dune mowers, find problems with the Trillions of dollars worth of infrastructure our government has built over there and initiate plans to remove it all, psycho-analyze everyone and everything in a 12 country region and tell all of them they are wrong in some shape form or fashion, and pass numerous laws making it illegal for Camels to pass gas so as to prevent climate change, and prevent smog while leading the globe in the creation thereof.

I'm sure they could bankrupt the entire region in a matter of a few weeks!

What ever may have been wrong with the prior regime of Mubarak he at least enforced a somewhat stable policy towards Israel. Basically with o's blessing the arab spring is turning Egypt into a terrorist headquarters on the Border with Israel. The Brotherhood with o's support (20 F16's) plus a bunch of $ foreign aid will put a dent in Israel's defenses. That's o's foreign policy in the Mid-East. So far he's supplying arms to numerous terrorist groups. Merry Christmas.
