why so much hate for the .204 but not the .17?

Haven't quite figured that one out myself... like just about everybody else these days, if I had to rely on a fur check to pay the bills it'd be a tough go of it. It's a lot more fun just being able to use it cover the seasons expenses with some left over for the daughter's college fund, new calling rifles, calls, and a little left over towards taking mama on a cruise . Not all called critters , of course . Trapped muskrats help out a lot .

EDIT- heard from a guy in Kansas that just had his account updated with NAFA and that all of his coyotes had sold with a $35 average and another guy in Minn. sold the rest of his for a $60 average. That's nothing to turn your nose up at ,fellas. Granted it's not the $80 coyotes we saw at one time, but sure beats $10 or $15.

No kidding.
I'm fortunate enough to have a traveling fur buyer live near me. When I sold him my goods last year he showed me a lot of ten big Western Pale Coyotes (that had been handled superbly). Said he paid a guy in MT a 70.00 average for em. Like ya say, it ain't the "good ol days" of the 70's and gas sure costs allot more just to get out there, but I sure wouldn't kick em in the ditch and walk away either.

I quit using my fur buyer when I noticed ( and it didn't make me long ) that he paid the same for on the round as he did for put up fur. And when I called him on it, his response was " Well...it is what is. And I'm the only buyer in this region, so if you wanna sell fur; gotta go through me ." I said the hayl with him and that attitude and started shipping and haven't looked back. Anyway, I liked that you added in the handling aspect. HUGE aspect of it. And that's why I like my fur handling to begin the moment of the trigger squeeze.

Anyway, I agree . And at what the prices are showing so far ... wait what am I saying ; I'm completely out this season unless I take a couple of days during my R&R in December.

Amen
Someone should make that their signature line.

Kinda like extortion ,isn't it? Or a monopoly on the region?

Might want to look up "extortion" cause it ain't even close.
Not really a "monopoly" either. More like the free market working per plan. I mean, no one's forcing a guy to sell to a county buyer. They can always put up their own fur and either ship it to one of the national buyers, or travel to an auction. (Something I really enjoyed when I lived in NV.) But if they're to lazy or don't have the time, the county buyer's better than nothing.
Don't get me wrong, an honest county buyer can be as rare as an honest politician, but again, no one's "forcing/extorting" you to use em any more than they're forcing ya to shop at the "convenience" store.
No different than Pawn Shops and/or those Payday Loan places which are basically legal loan sharks.
