I have had great success with calling coon. I have yet to really give it an honest chance in the day, but I have honed my technique for night hunting them.

There are basically two ways that I call coon. Set up on a known tree den and let the caller go until they come out of the tree for a look. Or slowly walk ditch lines and wood edges, calling while shining trees and the ground. The second method has worked very well for me. I have found that most of the coon I end up shining are in the trees. They seem to want to get to high ground for a better look as to what all the noise (ecaller) is about. A few times I have had them walk o the call and even fewer times I have had them charge to the call.

I have found that moonless dark nights, 30-50* temps, and little to no wind makes for outstanding coon calling in my areas.

Remember a coon has a good nose also so play the wind just like for coyotes. I had a coon last year coming in and didn't relize the wind shifted and it turned around and I didn't understand why until I checked the wind. I did get it as it was leaving.

DID SOMEONE SAY COON CALLING!!'

It's the best! Just start out easy, go to a place at night where you know there are coons "pond, trash dump, old barn, etc. call for ten minuets, shine shoot.

If they don't show up in ten minuets, move on.
