I reloaded some 58 vmax for my 243... WLR Primers... 44.7 gr 4898 powder...which should run it around 3800 fps... and they shot okay... about 3/4"-1" at 133 yds... but... the thing I'm asking is.... the primer area did not look like the load was too hot... so... can I... or should I... increase the load until it starts looking hot...? I started at 44.0 grs and the groups got better as I went hotter... so it makes me want to increase the load to see if it gets better or hotter... what do ya think...?

I assume you mean 4895 powder? I have no idea what book max is, but if you are not experiencing pressures in YOUR rifle then YES you can increase, in small amounts until you find max in YOUR rifle.

LOL... Oops.... I mean 4895... and I knew better... just hit the wrong key...

Hodgens says that 44.7 is max...

58 GR. HDY V-MAX IMR IMR 4895 .243" 2.600"

40.5 3551 fps 42,300 CUP --- 44.7 3819 fps 50,000 CUP

I guess I'll move on up until accuracy or pressure says stop..

I guess it will start to really scream...

My m7 with a 22" tube is right at 3700 (crony) with 43.6 gr of imr-4064. I've thought of pushing it harder, but it's accurate, so why bother? I'd say if it's accurate, keep it. If it needs tightening up, carefully push harder. Ymmv.

Edit to fix chrono speed

Im running right at 3800 fps with the 58g V & Zmax (same) with 44.8g 4320 & my primers are nice & rounded. Since I am at .750" to .800" @ 100 yds. with my 22" sporter bbl and its accurate so Im leaving it alone.

2700? Or 3700? 2700 seems kinda slow for a 58gr in a .243.

Generically, QuickLoad says you have room to push a little. You will need a pretty long tube though to get to that fps mark.

Do you mean a long case...?

No, he means a longer barrel.
22" and even sometimes 24" barrels won't GENERALLY get you to book stated velocities.

Your right Darkker.... LOL....what was I thinking about... of course he meant the barrel...

I'll setup my chrony the next time out to see what shes running... thanks...

Tube, pipe, barrel, you got to love our English language.

I would be suprised if you can chrono 3650fps.

Let us know what your chrono says.

I have a Rem. Mod. 660 in .243 Win with a 20" pipe [ tube, barrel ] that shoots the 55gr pill [ bullet ] well, but velocity is way low.

I get the fastest velocities with Win 760 and Fed 210's, start off at 46.5 and work up to 49.0g, stop if you see pressure signs...very accurate and fast.

Maximum velocities with the lighter bullets can be achieved with ball powders such as Winchester 760 and H380

that statement came from accurateshooters.com... sounds like I need to check into that powder after seeing what my max load is with the 4895... which I have 3 cans of and really want to use it... we'll see what she does... thanks...

I've been playing with the Nosler 55gr BT in my T-C Icon with a 24" barrel (243win).

So far, the speed demon has been BLC-2, where I've hit 4,100fps, with no pressure signs. Accuracy was good at .9".

Varget gets me 3,900fps and much better accuracy.

I can't wait to try them on coyotes.

I use h4895 and with 55gr nosler bt's loading 45 grains of powder I am getting 4025 fps out of a 24" barrel with no pressure signs. I get .75" groups at 100 yrds. They are totally destructive little pills on coyotes.
