African-American Church Leaders Condemn Obama For Gay Marriage Support
May 13, 2012 11:19 PM

Just days after President Barack Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, pastors and priests around Maryland took to their own pulpits with their reaction– and in some cases condemnation of the president.

Derek Valcourt explains the president’s comments have folks on both sides of the issue fired up.

Both sides hope the president’s position helps sway votes in their favor when the issue hits Maryland’s ballot this November.

I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said.

When Obama announced that his position on same-sex marriage had evolved, it outraged some African-American pastors like Pastor and Del. Emmett Burns.

“He has said to his base, African-Americans, ‘I am going against your beliefs and your thoughts,’” Burns said.

He’s so opposed to same-sex marriage, he told church members he will no longer support the president and now predicts Obama will lose the election because of it.

He and many other leaders are pouring their energies into gathering the signatures needed to put Maryland’s same-sex marriage law on the November ballot.

“I think it might be a call to action for people to really express what they believe,” Father Erik Arnold of Our Lady of Perpetual Help said.

In Maryland, some of the strongest opposition to the law has come from the black community– about 30 percent of the population. Some African-American religious leaders are preaching about it

“God said in every home, there needs to be a representation of his glory through manhood and femininity,” Pastor Harry Jackson, Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, said.

“To me, this is an issue of the separation of church and state,” Pastor Delman Coates, Enon Baptist Church in Clinton, said.

Coates is one of the few black pastors who supports the current law.

“We should not allow our subjective theological understandings prevent other citizens of this country from having equal rights,” he said.

So far, voters in 30 states have rejected same-sex marriage

But equality advocates in Maryland believe the president’s comments are a sign of the changing tide.

“The momentum is shifting. I think things are definitely shifting in our direction here,” Ezekiel Jackson of Marylanders for Marriage Equality said.

Many African-American pastors say they will still support the president in November even though they may not agree with him on this particular issue.

The president’s announcement that he supports same-sex marriage came just one day after voters in North Carolina banned same-sex unions.

It was a very bad move on his part!

Of course given the number of brothers that been in prison, maybe they'll be more understanding of it than we expect.

Politically it's not a bad move at all. An ant is nothing by itself but get enough ants together and it will destroy the largest animal alive.

Obama has done so badly since elected, lied so much, and lost so much mainstream support he will lose a toe to toe contest with the repubs. So the way to win is through minority voters. He can't promise free money this time because that hasn't exactly worked out for those he promised it to tje last time.

So he starts picking up the odd duck the other side rebukes. Gay folks etc, wouldn't surprise me if he next says he thinks, not acts but thinks, drugs should be legal. The little bites add up and possibly add up to a win. Even though he is being ostracized by many black leaders, they will still vote for him at the end just because he is black.

Fwiw there are a ton of good black folks that would make for an awesome prez, none of hem currently hold that office.

Not puzzling at all. Embracing gay marriage has netted him $21,000,000 in donations from the fruits and nuts gang out west and the very next day he issued a disclaimer, stating that, while he supports gay marriage, he feels it is a states issue, thus somewhat mitigating damages (he hopes) in the straight community. Combined with his slamming the religeous community by showing his disdain for their beliefs regarding birth control recently, hopefully this should just about do him in from that sector.

States rights? Gimme a break, coming from the most anti-10th amendment president this nation has ever known! He is simply trying to have his cake and eat it, too.
Hopefully the voters are sophisticated enough to see through that maneuver and the chickens will come home to roost in Nov.

Now let's see here. He forces Catholics to pay for employees birth control, contrary to their convictions and then renegs and forces their insurance companies to foot the bill when the flak got too hot. Now he embraces homosexuals but dumps the issue on states the next day. Does there seem to be a pattern here?

Though President Obama supposedly was not planning to endorse gay marriage until closer to the Democratic convention, the decision to make the call last week has paid dividends -- helping him raise at least $21 million for his campaign coffers in a matter of days.

The man is so arrogant he doesn't even consider it possible to lose. Yes the money from the queers is an added bonus, but this nutcase is more concerned with his legacy I believe. He is still fighting to gain the title of the first black President away from slick willy, he is only 1/2 ahead of Clinton. Moochelle stated yesterday that she plans to have her own talk show similar to the failing Oprah show when they leave office. She says she will emphasize fashion trends and nutrition. Oprah says she is not allowed in the Whitehouse as Moochelle doesn't like fat people. Thankfully, Moochelle will get the chance to fail at her new endeavor next January.

Yes HM, it's very interesting. But as HB would say, he's not flip flopping, he's evolving.LOL. And I see what you did there with the usage of that very appropriate word "reneg."
Let's hope we as a nation don't reneg in November.

When you bring that back into the picture, most churches also DON'T support gay marriage, because the Bible speaks very firmly against it. Black pastors are having a difficult time coming to terms with this because they are torn between supporting their black president, and their belief in the teachings of the bible. Some have even suggested this will lead to Obama's defeat in November.
