Afternoon all,
Finally had some time to take my new 257 Roy to the range. I've had the gun for about 3 months now and have only managed to shoot it a few times. Mostly just breaking it in. Also brought along the 270 Roy to try a few new loads.
Anyway, here are the standouts from each bullet type. Btw, I'm really liking this gun. It's a 257 Wby(Howa/Vanguard action),26in #4 contour Brux barrel, B&C stock, Timney trigger and a Zeiss Conquest 3x9.
71.5 gr of RL25; 115 Nosler BT; oal 3.15; Velocity-3458. Group size-.39
71 gr of RL22;100 Barnes TTSX; OAL 3.15; Velocity-3646. Group size-.44
71 gr RL-25; 115 Berger VLD; oal 3.23; Velocity-3420; Group size-.56
The gun is really liking the 115 Ballistic Tip. I've shot 5, 3 shot groups with them so far and all have been under one inch. Very consistent. All bullets have been seated deep at 3.15.
Only tried a few differnt loads with the TTSX's. I'm still a bit skeptical of the whole copper bullet craze, especially for Whitteail deer here in Tejas, but wanted to give them a whirl and see what all the hype is about. I like what I've seen on paper so far.
The Bergers have been ok but, a little inconsistent for my liking. I did shoot a .47 with the 115 VLD during break in, but couldn't match it today. As a side note, I was shooting a 3/8 in.steel plate at 400 yards with the VLD's and they were actually slightly penetrating that darn thing!!!??? I shot the same plate several times with 130 SST's from my 270 Roy and 100 gr Sierra's from my 25-06 and they would just splatter with zero penetration. Not sure what to think about that. Guess those Bergers are tougher than I thought.
Here's a target from my 270 Roy... Load was 73.5 of 7828ssc; 130 SST; oal 3.28; Velocity-3453; Group size .54.
