7mm RM 162gr A-Max loads

Just starting on loads with my new 7 Mag build using the 162gr A-Maxs but Im going with H4831sc and here is the first 30 rounds with two different seating depths, I think it will like the A-Maxs after a little more adjusting..

All 5 shot groups at 100yds,

My best results came from 68.1 grains of H-1000 with the 162 A-Max. Work up to that as they are pretty hot as I recall. Shooting out of a 26" Douglas #4.

I run 64gr H4831 and they shoot well. A good group at 100 with the amax out of the 7 mag doesn't mean it will be good out farther. I got it on then went to 250 yes for group. I just put a new trigger in mine so hopefully the wind will stop for a whioe

My remington 700 liked the 162g SST much better than the 162g A Max...go figure, your luck may be different.

My load is:

Remington brass
Win Mag primer
71.0g of Retumbo
162g SST
Bullet touching lands(very important)
Velocity was right at 3100 fps with a 26" barrel
this is a safe working max load for this barrel, work up to it with your rifle.
My groups run 3/8" at 100 yds with an 8-32x scope
Vias muzzle break allows me to see bullet impact on animal, kicks less than a 243.

I want to try some 168g Bergers and 180g Bergers next.

I can tell you that two freinds went to Africa for 7 plains game each with their 7 STW's with the 162's loaded at 3150 fps. They dropped all animals right in their tracks including Eland and Kudu...PH was very impressed.

Good luck!

I agree, looks like the top row seating depth was working better. What depth was that? Jam or jump? I'm working with the same combo and think I'll be in the 63-64 gr node as well. Do you know what velocity you got? Mine was 2835 at max load of 64 gr.

I run 64gr H4831 from my 7wsm also. Mine are seated at 2.855" which is .145" off. So far my 3 shot groups are running .5" - .7" at 100yds.

Are you measuring ogive or tip? Mine are seated at 3.400 for about 5/8" groups

Mine are from the tip, I can't remember my ogive measurement. I checked it but I'm drawing a blank.

I am going to check my velocity this weekend, any idea on your speed?

My rifle is throated short to run 'em from a SA so I'm seating to 2.905" coal, 0.10" off lands. 2940fps from a 24" Broughton. Match prepped Win brass, neck turned & bushing sized, that load is stooooooopid accurate.

That same rifle also likes the 168VLDs jammed w/ RL-22. Also, stoooopid accurate and higher MV, but those Amaxs are too badazz to bother with the Bergers...

I'm sorry I just read yours said Whizzer. Mines a rem mag. Sorry

NO, that's my fault for jumping in your 7mmRM thread!

Just thought it was interesting that the same load works well in both chambers...

my bad!

Just finished load testing again yesterday. The 63.5 gr of H4831sc is shooting really well (middle 2 targets). In both Win and Rem brass, velocities were within 2 fps on avg. and SD's were 8! Both grouped 1/2" at 100. Velocity was a little slower than I'd like at 2780 fps. I'll probably try RE22, IMR4831 and Retumbo just to see if I can get anywhere near 3000 fps with those powders, since I have them on hand.

I own 3 / 7mm rem mag rifles. I only load 140gr bullets. They shoot best for me.

If I need a 150+gr bullets, I go to 30cal. 155gr for 308win & 168gr for my 300 win mag.
