m1 garand load data

I am looking for any load data for an m1 garand with varget and 155 or 175 gr. projectile. I am looking for specific data, from what I have read a person should not get their loads too hot in the m1. If anyone has personal experience I would appreciate their input. Thanks in advance

Chris

The gas return system is the problem. IMR 4895 was the powder designed to use with a 150 gfmj for the M1. Check the powder burn rates, find a M1 Garand forums as they are out there.I am looking for a M14 to set up for long range and f-class.

I use 45 gr of VARGET with 149 gr. bullet. Sometimes I load the 130's with 47 gr. of VARGET. Shoots good. I never go above the 150's in the M-1. I am sure some do, but not me.

Varget may not damage the op rod, but is a bit on the slow side for the M1 IMO.

As has been stated, 4895 is the optimum powder for the M1. 47 gr. of 4895 duplicates USGI M2 ball velocities using 150 or better yet 168 gr. SMK's.

46 gr. 4895 behind the 175 or 180 gr. SMK's closely duplicates USGI M72 Match ammo which was issued to military AMU's for match shooting in the Garand and pushes a 173 gr. FMJ bullet @ 2640 fps.

Have shot lots of both through both personal M1's and gov't issued without any signs of op rod damage. Note, 46.3 gr IMR4895 w/180 gr. and 47.8 r. w/168 gr SMK is listed as max. in Sierra manual so start low and work up.

Of course, you can get an adjustable gas cyl plug and w/proper setting not worry about using slower powders. Port pressure is what damages op rods, not breech pressure.

the booklet that comes with it says not faster than 3031 , nor slower than 4320. i shot 2500 rds. one year. included h and i 4895; varget and n150. from the charts n150 is a little slow. however the section in the hornady manual on loading the garand n150 and n140 did awesome. there are several places on the internet to get more info too.

I use Varget because it fits so many calibers. I use it for .223, 22-250, 6 BR, 30BR, 308 and 30-06. Just makes the loading bench eaiser to manage.
