Celebrating My 100th Coyote

We have had a pretty slow start this year, but yesterday “eclipsed” the rest of the days! We started off the morning with a total lunar eclipse and we figured that was a good sign. Unfortunately, I had some errands to take care of so we were only able to call four stands in the morning and then four more in the afternoon. I have been keeping track of all my coyotes since my first in 2002 and I went into yesterday with 97 coyotes killed since then.

I took a new friend out for his second try at predator hunting and we had a great day. My first stand was dry, so I made him call the second stand with Dan Thompson’s PC-1 call. Sure enough we had magpies escort in a really nice female to about 50 yards on my side and I had number 98.

I called another dry stand, so I put my friend back to work on the fourth stand and sure enough, we had another magpie show us a slow-comer out across a big sagebrush flat. The coyote paused at about 150 yards and my friend put one right over its head. It turned and lined out and I made the luckiest shot I have ever made with my .223. I managed to hit it right between the shoulder blades on a dead run at about 250 yards. I had number 99!

We had to run down to Colorado at mid-day but on the way, we saw about 25 eagles including five bald eagles, two more coyotes, and we had over 500 elk cross the highway in front of us. We were stopped for almost five minutes while the “gang” poured across the road (destroying the ROW fences on both sides). I think I have only seen one other group this large and it was in Colorado as well.

In afternoon, we got back to calling. In first stand I called one in to about 70 yards and stopped it broadside (my buddy swears it was at least 350 yards!) . He managed to blow the snow out right past the coyote, but never actually hit it. We hustled to the next stand for some redemption and at about seven minutes with the PC-1, one magically appeared on my side at about 60 yards. By the time I swung the gun he was running hard. Apparently, I used all of my running shot luck on number 99 earlier!

We were running out of daylight and I still wanted him to get his first coyote so we flew to another stand where I have called a couple in the past. I gave him the best view and told him that the others had always come in from his side. Wouldn’t you know it, I had one come in the back door and stop about 50 yards below me. I held on the middle of his chest… and had number 100!

I still owe my friend his first coyote, but I think he is hooked none-the-less. At the end of the day, we saw seven coyotes, called five, shot at six, and killed three. My buddy called three of the five which I thought was pretty good for his second day. We had five positive stands out of eight called. I plan to get to work on my next 100!

In order from top to bottom, numbers 98, 99, and 100.

Glad to see you finally have some success. Maybe I will get up there again in a few days... But who knows. I better hit some areas close to home in the mean time.

Great job, sounds like that you were showing your new calling partner how to get it done. Hard to argue with that kind of action.

Congrats! Thats a bunch of dogs! Wish it was possible to kill 3 in a day here! Heck we went today and only saw 2 and no possible shot on either!
