Looking for 22-250 load w/ 64 grn. Winchester PP

I am looking to load some 64 grain Winchester PP's in my 22-250. I would like to use Varget, but would look at other as well. What do you all prefer? Also, I am shooting a Stevens 200 w 1 in 12 twist. Any issues with the load?

That's a heavy bullet, don't know if the 1:12 will stabilize it but give it a try. I have no loads in any of my books for it. However, if it were me, I'd use the 60 gr data and cut it back a little. Good choice with the Varget.

+1 on the heavy bullet for that twist rate. I have a 22-250 with a 1:12 but have never shot anything over 55 gr. I am not a fan of Varget. I bought some and have been working up loads with it but do much better with H380. You might give that a try.

The 64 gr PP is a great hunting bullet. I have not seen them for a while but Winchester did manufacture loaded 64 gr PP ammo for the 22-250. I would check with one of the loading manuals and use load data for the 63 gr semi-pointed sierra.
I used the 64 gr PP in my 14 T 220 swift with 39.5 gr of ww-760.
The 22-250 would be a couple of grains less.
Good luck

Ok guys. I too can not find any load data in the manuals. I loaded a few similar to the sierra 63 grn loads. 33 grns of Varget with an COL of 2.350. They shot "ok". In three, 3 shot groups, I consistantly had 2 of the rounds virtually touching, with one flyer. tightest group at 50yrds was +/- 1" out ofthe lead sled. Not good! Any ideas? Too fast or slow? Any other powders I might try with this bullet? Thanks for all the input.

ID Dog Chaser,

I don't think that 1-12 will stablize a 64 gr and shoot groups without fliers. I would think that you are limited to bullets in the 50 to 60 gr range, the mid weights being your best shooting.

Try using a 60 gr bullet with H380 or IMR4064. The 4064 and the H380 are similar in burn rate. H380 is spherical or ball, and 4064 is cylindrical.

I would bet that with a 60 gr bullet you won't get the fliers.

Good Luck
Gary

I've had real good results with reloder 15 pushing 55 grain bullets in my 22-250. The only data I find with heavier bullets is in the Speer reloading manual but it's for a 70 gr SP. But I do agree with others that getting the groups you want with a 1:12 twist is going to be tough and probably drive you nuts.

I used a load of 34g of IMR 4350 with a 63g Sierra in a 1-14 twist with a win primer, bullet touching the lands, that should give you a good place to start. Back off two grains and go up from there.

Good luck

I shoot an old Ruger 22-250 with a 1-14 twist and it shoots the Sierra 63 Semi Points into Nichol size groups or better at 100 YDS. My deer load.

I have been shooting the 64gr winchester power point bullet out of my 22-250's for over 15yrs. I buy them in bulk on sale from Midway. 500ct box's. 38gr H414/W760 magnum rifle primers RP brass in a 24" 1-14" remington 788 3364fps average velocity The 64gr PP is a short for weight bullet if your rifle will shoot a 55gr spbt bullet it should shoot the 64grPP. Mine shoots 3/4" groups, has for many years.

This is my 22-250 load. 41gr. H380 55gr.nosler ballistic CCI primers and Remington brass. 1/2 inch group at 100yds and 1 1/2 at 200yds from a Remington 700 24" barrel 1-14 twist.
