Just wondering about twist rate on .243 build for 55-85 gr bullets? Would the 1:10 stabalize alright or should a guy go 1:12? Going with 26" Varmint Contour on Rem 700 action.

thanks in advance!

1-10 would be fine. My 1-9&1/8 twist Remmy likes anything from 58 gr VMax to 100 grainers. If you were only going to shoot light bullets, the 12 would be fine. But with the 85s you mentioned, go with a 10 twist.

get the 10 if you want to shoot 85 or heavier.

Berger just put out a new 87 grain designed for up to a 1:10. There are

some nice 105 and 115 bullets that require a 1:7. If you are looking for

1000+ yards then think about a faster twist.

I have shot the 1-12's with the 80's at 3500 for years, 85's+ seem to get started a lot slower and never speed up. My shooting was never past 550 yards.

you need an 8 twist for the 105 -107's; and they use a 14 for the 60-68's out of a ppc. for 100-300 benchrest. there are several articles about twist rate on 6mmbr and riflemans blog. i have a 12 twist hart . a 12 twist will be awesome depending on what brand you get. krieger , hart broughton

12 will be pushing it when you break above 80 gr.

The 80gr berger & 75 Vmax shoots GREAT out of a 12 twist. Get much longer than that & you get a wobble. I do know Jerret has had success with the 85gr Sierra HP & 1-12" pushing them HARD. You might want to go 1-10 that will get you through most typical hunting & varmint bullets.

As stated the 105 Berger VLD's need at least a 8.5" twist. I've not shot any of the 115's, but they say 7.5 or faster...

Out of the two, I'd go 10. However, if it were me, it would be twisted faster...

I just ordered a douglas 1-12 for my kimber montana. I only plan to shoot light bullets @ top speeds. 55 grain bullets going 4000fps negates the theory u need high bc to fight wind deflection. Getting my bazooka bedded also. Hopefully no more flyers and endless testing of reloads. I originally wanted a Ultra Light Arms in 243 that I saw @ the NRA show. Wow! Picking up that gun and handling it was an experience! Didn't have the 3 g's [beeep]!! smile
Good Luck!

Speed helps but not really replaces...

55gr Nosler -4000fps @ 300 yards in 10mph wind is 7.3" deflection---22.6" @ 500 yards

105gr Berger -3100fps @ 300 yards in 10mph wind is 5" deflection---14.7" @ 500 yards

8" extra @ 500

I would say speed might help, but weight would help more than speed. It is basic physics it takes more force to move something of greater mass. Also, of course better BC will make the wind have less effect.

I like those numbers but what is the kill performance of a VLD bullet on a yote compared to a frangible type bullet?
Is 3100fps a typical obtainable number w/o going to a 28 inch type barrel?
I have had very many run offs w/ 270 w/ 100 grain vmax @ 2900. Had some DRT, but I never have runners w/ 55 @ 4000fps.
Don't mean to highjack the op.
