Max range for .22-250

A fast twist (1-8 or faster)22-250 with a 75gr A-max or heavier, higher BC bullet, will easily ring steel @ 1000 yds consistently if the rifle and shooter are up to the task........

This question has alot of variables. Twist rate of the gun. Faster twist with heavier bullets and better BCs. But the standard 22-250 with standard bullets, etc. I have shot ~ MOA out to 500 yds. I'm sure it can go further, but that isthe max of MY experience with that cartridge.

1:12 twist 50gr vmax, I think 242bc. I knew the variables would be the determining factor. Just wanting an estimate +/- 100yds.

I was out at 750 today. The drop was 116", and the estimated energy was 200ft/lbs so I was figuring the bullet was slowed way down out that far. I was kinda rushed so I didn't get a group. Just hitting a steel plate 24" x 18".

I figure 600 yds or so is max with that setup.

I agree 600 is about the max of the round. (for a normal factory rifle) I load 60gr V-max's in my Savage 22-250 (1 in 12 twist) and longest I have been able to shoot is 300 and I can consistently blow up 20oz bottles. It all depends like the other posts have said depends on your rifle, scope, shooting rest, weather, ammo. But I would say with the right variables you can take a 22-250 out to 600 yards.

Between my brother and myself we shoot 3,000 to 5,000 rounds of 22-250 each summer at p-dogs off of portable benches. We shoot 55 grain Sierra Blitz King and 55 grain Hornady V-Max bullets. My longest shot was 1047 yards and his is 861 yards. A person has to launch a boatload of ammo at those ranges to connect. It doesn't take much change in the environmental variables to raise heck with a 22-250. In my experience the 22-250 is realistically a 500-600 yard varmint cartridge.

861 yards with a 22-250

Thats what I was thinking was around 600. Not saying that you can't do any more than that. After that I feel like you would need a good spotter to call the shots, or have shot a lot of rounds at that distance to really know what your gun does.

Here is the steel target I was shooting at. These shots were trying to get the scope dialed in. First shot was the hole with the green marking around it. I had the height right just needed to work the wind.

Used to be a lot of p-dogs near Shoshoni. I guess between the poison and the disease, they pretty much died off. We hunt south of Casper.

I would say depends on how well the gun shoots. Some will hold MOA easily at 300 yds or more, Some won't do it at 50.

And that's the truth
