Dixie had her litter of pups from Gunner, sometime today. These are my two top dogs and I've been anxious about this repeat breeding.

These pups are 25% Blackmouth Cur, 25% Catahoula, 25% Mountain cur, and 25% Jagdterrier. She ended up having 5 males and 4 females. She caught me a bit off-guard, as I didn't expect them till next week. But...all are good and healthy.

Six of the pups are already spoken for, but hopefully all do well and I have some available to others.

Thought I'd share.

Tony

Devin, You may have produced me an ugly dog, but man is she a rock star! smile The first litter all died at 4.5 weeks from parvo, last year. Since I switched to vaccinating the live vaccine and aggressively start shots at 4 weeks, instead of 6 weeks, it seemed to be the trick here. I've got my fingers crossed on this litter. The last litter, they were all long haired like Dixie.

I was happy with the number born, Nate. Your little guy/gal is in there somewhere. smile

Thanks all...

You are right Al. She had black/tan, blonde, blonde masked, light brindle, and dark brindle. Some smooth, some wired. A hodge-podge of pups. smile I just got done docking tails and dewclaws a few mins ago.

I'll get you taken care of Steve. Can hook you up with one from each litter, if you like. My lacy dog is big as a house and making milk. She will be dropping pups within in the next few days.

Thanks all.

Been having my hands full here. Dixie ended up getting Mastitis (infection of the mammary glands). I've got her on daily penicillin shots and I've been bottle feeding the pups. Lost one pup, but rest seeming to be doing fine. I have a strong feeling this is the exact thing that happened to the last litter, when they all died from dehydration, last year, at 4 weeks old.

Lacy is having pups right now, two born already. They are HUGE puppies. I'll be up with her most of the night, as this is her first litter. Hoping to be able to swap Dixie pups on her 5 or 6 times a day, instead of bottle feeding. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Will take pics when I can.

How about culling a couple of pups so she has less to take care of. Her and the pups will do better and it will not drag her down so bad. Had this conversation a couple of weeks ago with a knowledgable dog man. It maybe a option.

With having 3 litters so close together, I am hoping to be able to balance pups out in the boxes. I like that option -vs- culling pups at a young age, that could possibly be rockstars. I'll bottle feed them, before that. I know what you are saying, but my request list for pups from this litter is full and I'd hate to cull a pup...especially from that litter.

Just came back from checking on Lacy. 8 puppies right now. 5 males - 3 females. Hopefully done. Two are tan and the rest are dark like Lacy. Not black, but a funky chocolate/bluish black. Hard to explain. She's got it too. Must be the Blue Lacy blood.

I know what you are saying about the rockstar thing. I sure like that Dixie Gunner cross. I hope it works out great for you. I bet those pups will make nice dogs.

W2B has been monitoring this thread closely and can't wait for the pics. Not even married yet and she wants to get back from the honeymoon so it will be closer to the pups arrival.

Hope all turns out well.

Tony, I just saw your post, if it was my dog I would shoot her with tetrocyclene (sp?) And rub cocoa butter into her bag. Make sure to keep the milk flowing from her. I have let tHe pups keep on nursing, and never hurt them, I know other guys who also have. But worst case get down there and milk her like a Tiny cow, or a Goat (Tim can help you with this process, I hear he has lots of experience!haha) but seriously, if you do this, it should pass, and clear up in three or four days, and be right as rain.

I highly appreciate the advice. One breast got hard as a rock, by the time I found it and milked out puss and blood. The other teets all had blood in the milk. The hard breast finally split open on the sides and leaked out everywhere like a boil would. She's been on penicillin for 4 days now and the milk cleared up. Still bottle feeding and letting them nurse on her, not wanting to take any chances.

Brian, Gunner's cough is seeming to clear up. I'm hoping it was just a grass seed down in the lungs. Wouldn't be the first time for him, while decoying.

I'll get pics soon Steve. Inlaws just left after 1.5 weeks of visiting/staying with us. Live will get back to normal now. smile smile

Thanks guys.

I took a couple of quick photos, this am, when getting ready to bottle feed Dixie's pups. Their eyes aren't open yet, but will very soon. They've got a veracious appetite. smile

Just like her last litter, some of them really took on the Jagdterrier look.

Not the best photos, but best I could do, as they woke up and was ready to eat the world this morning. smile

Thought I'd share.

Tony, I just now checked back on the pups, and have seen where you are having to bottle feed the pups some, as well as let them nurse Dixie. I have been thru this problem several times during the last fifty years of raising dogs.

Many times I have had to put pups with foster mothers. A Vet Friend once told me to spray a little Hair Spray on the Pups and let the Foster Mother smell them, and she will then let the pup nurse. I have used this trick several times, and it has saved many, many pups for me along with Goats Milk and Karo Syrup. I also put the Foster Mother on a very good Vitamin, and all the Purina Puppy Chow she can eat. I start all my pregnant females on Puppy Chow about a month before they are due to cycle for breeding, it keeps them and the pups healthy.

Sorry I was so long winded, and the Best of Luck with the Pups.

Guys I can't explain why it works nor can My Vet Friend, He said he learned the Trick while in College and working with pigs, and it always worked with the Sows when they would have to take on extra Pigs.

Tony,

You are gonna be super busy, I know you are up to the challenge. Those lacey pups have some neat coloring. I can't wait for them to get bigger and fur in their mouths.

The tip about feeding the dog puppy chow is a good one. I did that in high school to my female and still do the same. Seems to get them ready, but them pups are hard on them.

Good luck with all the pups Tony.

Well, Dixie had gone completely dry and I've been bottle feeding the pups 100%. This is a repeat of last year, all over. They were doing good, up till 2 days ago. They started going down hill. Lost one yesterday, one last night, and the entire litter today. 8 pups down the drain in 2 days! frown Shows signs of parvo at 2.5 weeks old! Arghhh!!!

To those that were on the list for Dixie/Gunner pups, I am really sorry. I tried my best. This is the 2nd attempt and now I am considering on just getting Dixie fixed and using her on stands all year long.

Thanks guys. I was getting pretty attached to the little suckers, bottle feeding them all day and night. I guess she isn't meant to be a momma.

Tony, for what it's worth spray down your property with plain old bleach with a miracle grow type hose attachment. A vet told me of this treatment years ago when my lab got it. Sorry about the pups, I hate that news.

Sorry to hear that Tony, I know you did a number on your place last time trying to get rid of that nasty stuff. Best luck with the other litter buddy.

Thanks guys. I'm not sure if it was parvo or not. I had them in a wire kennel in my house. All were doing fine, very good appetites and growing good. I guided hunters last week and left others in charge of their care. I noticed they started acting different, and looking dehydrated. Tried to double the amount of milk replacement to them, but had to force feed most of them. Then they started dropping like flies. No signs of bloody scours, that you typically see with parvo. Total repeat of last year with this litter.

Tony, that is a real bummer. That hurts me and they weren't even mine. I was real fortunate when I used to raise a lot of beagles. I always gave the bitches Milkade starting about a month before they were due to whelp and they always had lots of milk and no problems. Of course that doesn't necessarily apply to your situation. Sure sorry for your loss.

Tony,
Times like this are when its hard to be self employed. I'm sure that beyond the "love of the game", you were also needing that money for other things for your business. Good luck man. I hope things turn around for you
