222 Rem loads

Guys,

I am looking for loads for the 222 Rem.

I want to use 55gr or 50gr VMax bullets.

What do would you recommended?

One of these powders, and probably in the order listed too.

Benchmark
H322
H4198
or IMR 8208XBR

Use the range suggested by Hodgdon, start in the lower middle of the range and work up to see what you rifle likes.

I have no loads for bullets that heavy. My CZ in 222 likes Reloader 7 and 40 grain Noslers, with Rem 7-/12 primers, WW brass..

A max load of Reloader 7 with a 50 or 52 grain bullet has always been a popular load. I know it shoots real well in my BDL.

Gerhard:

I like Ramshot XTerminator powder in my .222, perhaps that is not available down there. Also, AA 2230 is good...both ball powders and they meter very well.

For economical and accurate hunting bullets, try Hornady 50gr. SXSP, Sierra 50 gr. Blitz, or Speer 52 gr.HP.

22 gr of H322 is all you need to know

40g vmax, 21g IMR4198, Win case, CCI 400, 3500fps, 1/4 MOA
40g vmax, 21.5g H4198, Win case, CCI 400, 3500fps, 1/4 MOA
55g vmax, 24.5 IMR/H4895, win case, CCI400, 3100fps, 1/2 MOA

Rifle is an older 700 ADL w/24" bbl. Shoots like a triple deuce should!

I threw the 40g loads in there because I really feel this case, with the plastic tipped 40g bullets at 3500fps is a lot better killer then a 55g at 3000-3100fps, and a lot flatter shooting as well. I've killed quite a few yotes with the 40g vmaxs out to 350 yards, only lost 1 and that was because he was runing, and I know I didn't hit him very good. Other then that, when those 40g vmaxs hit a dog where they spose to, its usually DRT performance. Just ones opinion.

I shoot a more scaled back load in my triple deuce......19.5 gr. of 4198 pushing a 45 gr. Sierra Blitzking. This load is more of a rock chuck/ground squirrel load than a serious coyote load that doesn't heat the barrel up as fast.

I too have an older 700 ADL with a 24 inch sporter bbl. and like kyotekiller's, mine tends to favor the lighter bullets as well. I haven't tried in a while with any of the newer powders, but never was able to get a 55 gr. bullet to group much under 1 MOA.

Thanks for the info.

Will get some 40gr VMax to try with our South African Powder. I used the 40gr VMax in my 22K Hornet but did not get good results at around 2800fps.

Maybe with the 222Rem they will perform better.

Gerhard, what powders are available in South Africa?

It's too bad you can't find X-Terminator. I use it with the 50-grain V-Max in .222 and its accuracy is OUTSTANDING.

Basically non of the powders that you will find.

Locally produced Somchem powders are good make no mistake but we dont have such a wide variety like you guys to choose from.

+1 I also like IMR 4198 an H4198 with the same bullet.

BL-C2 and Sierra 50 gr Blitz is another good load.
