Andy and Allen Smith came out from Ohio to hunt with me in Nevada, Utah, and Idaho. On the first stand of the day, I managed to call up a quadruple to 30 yards of the FOXPRO. Allen had never killed a coyote, ever, and was excited to spill first blood. He moved a little too quickly and they all busted him and fled. I began to bark and stopped a couple of them at 120 yards. Allen smashed the first one he could find in his scope with the Savage .243 "Street Howitzer"! He was excited to kill his first and was amazed at how fast the action was. This was a Nevada female about 25 lbs.
An hour or so later, we got to watch a coyote respond to the Firestorm from more than a mile away. She worked her way up through the cattle to a mere 70 yards. I stopped her with a whistle and Andy bang flopped her with the Savage .22-250. This Utah female weighed about 22 lbs. She was locked on the FOXPRO Jack Attack Decoy the entire time...
A cold front moved in on the next stand and brought with it snow flakes the size of waffles. We had a lot of elevation but limited sight due to the storm. At 7 minutes, I hear Allen say, "Coyote, right there! Right in front of us." I couldn't find it in the camera. She was standing in shoulder high sage 80 yards out staring right at us. She turned to leave and we both got on her while I gave Allen the signal to kill her. He shot, and she crumpled in the snow at 100 yards. She was a big ol' pale colored Utah female in the 40 pound range!
We battled some weather for the rest of our trip but still managed to put 19 coyotes and a kit fox within gun range! We hunted hard, laughed even harder and made a great friendship. What a blast...
