Yet another Public Land Hunting Horror Story-

Once again (Friday Morning), I was bumped out of my hunting spot by an extremely rude older man. But Thats another story. My story is: At the end of rifle season, the Coon hunters are allowed back on public land to hunt. A camp buddy told me he was talking to a few of them and they told him, that after the first week of coon hunting, they start stealing deer hunters tree and ladder stands. Their comment was, there fair game. How "chicken sh-t". My friend asked, how can you do this kinda thing? He just replyed, fair game! I guess if I kill his favorite coon hound, is that fair game? What ever happened to respect for other hunters? How do you expect to teach young hunters respect with this going on? Buy the way, my camp buddy said the coon hunters two sons were standing with him.

idiots, pure idiots...far as public land goes,my stands and such leave there the day after season ends...short of family emergency, they get taken down,no matter what

I have started using a climber this season for that reason and also mobility. I just think that is to frickin bad that you can't trust people anymore. Exspecialy fellow hunters. Theft and poaching from public hunters and land just sucks. What has happened to the peoples morals? I watched a boxing match on HBO last night. One of the fighters said all his father taught him was how to steal. Seems like we're in a troubled world.
Just for the record, I know there are still alot of good moral people out there and I applaud you. Keep up the good work!! Teach your children well! ( Wasn't that in a song?)

Wow. I don't have that problem here as you can't leave a stand up over night on public land in WI. Some real nice people you ran into.... I would hide a trail cam right by your stand to catch them in the act. I can only imagine the look on their face then.

Sure ill be stepping on toes here but o well...around here there is no other way to describe a coon hunter other then a worthless poaching tresspassing idiot...and that's not for everyone just majority. I had a guy tell me one time his dog didn't know property lines..........I said no but you pull that trigger I bet you sure do...

Try using a chain and padlock, and also take 3 or 4 tree steps out of the tree so they cant use them to get to your stand. It may not keep them from steeling them but they will have to work a little harder to do it! I know it shouldnt be necessary to do all of this in the first place but some people are idiots.

Smokin 250 I take great pride in being a Coon hunter and take great offence to your uneducated statement ! Attitudes like yours is why we as hunters of different game cannot stick together in any manner . It might be different in OH but round here you wont find better people !

Coon Hunter, Deer Hunter, Duck Hunter, ect. ect. It all ends with the word HUNTER. We are all cut from the same cloth. As responsible humans/hunters, shouldn't we all try to detour theives and illegal acts in OUR hunting land? If our best friend is stealing, do we just turn our backs and let it happen? This guy was talking of stealing stands in front of his kids! Is he just starting a new generation of thieves? He should be teaching them how to properly coon hunt and respect the rights of others. I guess I am confused!

had the same thing happen this year on KS WIHA. also had 2 stands on the properties that i lease. i didnt take them, just took them down hoping they would get the hint. 1 guy was dumb enough to put it right back up and the other moved it 100yrds down creek. should i take the stands or what?

When I hang my stand I pad lock it to the tree then I take the first 3 tree steps out. I figure if they need it more than me they will have to work at.

I have found some GREAT houndsmen, and some not so great!
I am lucky..Live on 900 acres of pure delight game habitat(private) in the SOCIALIST state of IL.

We have alot coyote houndsmen...some really great...some are worthless trash.

Right after christmas, pack of hounds ran one thru my 5 acre yd.....here comes the truck..thru my yd...
ran outside hopped the quad runner...caught up with and passed the truck in the back field behind the house. Parked quad in front of creek crossing and blocked it.

The backwards inbred individual(I am from east TN I should know one when I meet one)hops out off the truck cussing and screaming and threatening to "whup my @$$" not a great encounter...told him to get off the place and get his hounds off the place. He said a few more choice statements and I finally lost my temper. Took yea old 357 out of small of my back and told him"either leave now, or truck won't be going anywhere"...he decided to leave. Called Sherriff and gave em the rundown and plate number....they popped him for tresspass....after all said and done...it was his 31st tresspass conviction in the county!!!!!!!!!
Only bad one I have met so far...lots of guys ask and I let em run there dogs all they want.
1 bad person makes every one of us look like trash!!!!!!!!!

Elevate the trial cam in an opposite tree where no one would look for it. Put it at least 15-20 feet above the ground and take your screws out so they would have to have screws to climb the tree too. This is how I hang my trail cams on public ground to avoid having them stolen. It is also a neat view of the wildlife.
