Ok you want to pull that coyote off the road it traveling down to a baited trap. You don't want it too close to the road because even if you catch it, it will probably be gone when you get to it. So how far do you set if off the road to avoid it being stolen but so it still has a good scent signature that reaches the road?

A coyote can smell your lure from quite a distance. The question is whether he will leave the road to investigate. More than likely he has a destination in mind while he is trotting down the road. I would not try to pull the coyote any further than 20 yards. And make that set very easy to get to. I like to set right on top of sign, so my set would go at the road. You could run your traps early to avoid theft. You could also use a slide wire from the road to cover. And also you could use extension chain and a hook or drag if you figured the coyote would tangle close by, but out of sight.
