Long Range 6mm Rem Loads?

DoubleCK

Greetings, I know there are some 6mm Remington fans here. I am getting ready to work up a load for my new 40XB KS. 27", 10-twist, stainless barrel.

http://www.remingtoncustom.com/40X_40xbks.aspx

The grand plan is to settle on a single load that the gun likes that I can use for long range deer/antelope/coyote. After settling that I will have a custom turret dial made for the VX3 6.5X-20X Leupold.

If you feel you can share any pet loads or bullet/powder combination(s), I would be grateful.

Feel free to private message me if you wish.

Many Thanks!

b.c. helps with wind and drop. the 105 may or may not shoot. an 87,88, 95 berger, a bal tip , 90, 95 or 100. i only load for .243 but i would start with h4350, then hv100, or h4831. very very nice gun.

The lightest load I ran in my 6mm rem is a 95 gr. nosler ballistic tip with 46.5 gr. of h4831. This load has shot very well out to 600. Other loads that I have run include, (but I dont think you can run these load with a 10 twist)
105 amax and 43.5 r22
105 amax and 41 of r17
107 smk and 40.8 of r17

Good luck

I loaded more in the 65 to 85 gr weight bullets...... BUT... Vn550 was a really special powder for the 6mm rem for me..... highest velocities and best accuracy..... the 4350's and ww760 were very very good but i felt the vn550 was great

I had a Remington 700 VLS in a 6mm Rem That loved 105 A-Max
with IMR4350 40.5gr seated .020" off lands and IMR 4831 43gr with the same seating depth both at 200yds stayed inside a quarter with the 4350 shooting just a little better.

Info only. According to my cheat sheet from Sheilen barrels, your best accuracy in a 1:10 twist ratio barrel will come from bullets maxing out at 85 grs. I use 68 gr BART's in a 1:8 twist ratio being pushed by 29 grs of VVN133 in a 29" Savage barrel.

If that was a factory barrel, you were very lucky to get 105's to shoot well. What twist was it? 1-8 twist is the only 6mm barrels that I could ever shoot 105 SMK's with any consistency.

My remington had a 9 1/8 twist I beleive. But the 105 A-max I think calls for a 9 twist I think its been about 10yrs ago.

The first bullet that comes to mind for deer and antelope, is the 85 gr. Barnes TSX. If it will shoot well in your rifle, it should work well for medium size game. I am considering trying that bullet in my 6mm06.

The Barnes will exit generally, and definitely would on a broadside coyote.

10" twist is gonna limit your LR ability...

I'd say the 87g vmax is going to be your best bet with an even .400 BC

You might get away with the 95g vld though as well, which would also be another great bullet, better then the 87g vmax anyways.

Id forget a custom turret. You'll be limited to 1 load at a certain temp, altitude, etc...More hassle then its worth, and when your shooting real long range, like past 600 yards, you have to take many factors into account, not just putting the dot or line on the target and shooting just becasue its 800 yards. You gotta take temp, altitude, pressure, angle into consideration. A custom turret is OK for out to 500-600 yards, but IMO, its not good for much past that. Learn to dial in MOAs and you dont need a custom turret, you can switch bullets if you desire, etc..

Either way, good luck with your new toy! Hope you get her shooting the way you want.
