Custom gunsmithing

Has anyone had a custom rifle built by a gunsmith located in the midwest? Seems kinda tough for me to find a smith on the net so any leads would be greatly appreciated!

I have used Bob Jourdan for a .243 AI project. I just had him put on a barrel and true up the action, but it turned out very well. Very reasonable prices as well.

Randy Selby in Wyoming. He has a website. Rebarreled my M70 with a SS 6.5x55 fluted barrel. Trued the action and bedded the McMillan stock. Shoots better than I can...

There are many great smiths in the midwest. The top of the list would be Stan Ware SGR rifles in MN, GA Precision Kansas city. Gordy gritters IA. Longshot rifles in MO. The Scheel in Sioux Falls SD has a pretty good rifle smith and fairly quick turn around.
If you don't have a barrel already that will be what takes the longest to get 10-20 week is not uncommon. So some of the big shops have barrels in stock.

Ive looked at gordy gritters website and he is high dollar! Goes with his reputation [beeep] I guess. Theres a scheels near me in corralville, IA but no smithing available. Gander Mountain in Davenport offers smithing but idk if I trust them. A friend of mine has had alot of rimfire bench guns built by Brian voelker out of Ryan Iowa but he doesnt seem too interested in what I wana do. What about shilen or Hart or midway usa? any idea what their prices are?

You could always call Shilen, Hart, Pac-nor, Lilja, Kreiger, ect.. Expect to pay $200-350 on a barrel blank alone with any of the above, plus $150 in 'smithing time...

Not sure what you're looking to do, but Gre'-Tan or Weaver Rifles are very good. Both have websites.

Brian Voelker is more of a rimfire specialist. He's done work for me and is very, very good.

Oh I know all about Brian! He has built a ton of competition guns for my friend and they are amazing! He let me shoot his championship 541 sporter at the iowa state br 50/50 shoot last summer for the sporter class. It was awesome!

What are you looking to do? You are right the smiths with great reps will be more expensive and have long wait times. A good barrel blank will start at $250 fora Douglas. The rest of the good ones will be $300+. Midway has Shilen, Krieger and Douglas I thinks and seem about 20-40 more then buying direct, but no wait. Krieger, Pac nor, Hart and Lilja all has in stock pages on thier sites. Only the Desmoines and Sioux Falls scheels have gunsmiths. I know knowthing about Des moines but Kyle at SF Scheels biult a gun for me and it is put together well and shoots great.

I want to build a combination gun I guess. Sort of a hunting/f-class rifle. 25-06, pre-accutrigger savage 110 action, shilen trigger, accurized and trued, beaded stockys laminate thumbhole or mcmillan a2 stock, 28-30 inch fluted stainless barrel of "factory bull barrel" diameter. I would like it to be a repeater and under 12lbs. Sounds pointless to many but its what I want for my own pure enjoyment. Im completely aware of the accuracey of a factory savage and how much this will all cost so no lectures please! Ive been fortunate enough to be around some great benchrest shooters and amazing rifles and I know the bits and pieces I would like to take from bench guns, and incorporate into a hunting and occasional competition gun. No manufacturer makes exactly what I want so Im gona have someone make it for me

With it being a savage you have some more option. I just parted ways with a very over built Savage, you don't have to tell me about them.
The 2 best Savage guys are Sharp Shooter Supply and Stockade, both hae nice stocks also. Centershot rifles will work a savage for you also. Kyle at Scheels fitted my barrel and inletted my stock on my savage. Northland supply and Sin arms make and stock barrels.
Sounds like a nice project. I would get a barrel and the few tools you need and change the barrel yourself. If it is not as accuate as you want then have a smith true up the action. Check out Savageshooer.com

If you are interested in going to Bartlesville, OK. you can hook up with the Great guy named Bob Jourdan. He knows more about bench and hunting guns than anyone I have ever talked to. He works alot with Savage actions and is exteremly reasonable. If you are interested in talking with him, PM me and I will send you all his info. I posted somthing on him and a build he did for me with the prices about 6 mos ago if you know how to look it up. Can't say enough good things about him...Brent

Scott is his name. He is out of idaho, specializes in Savage arms. Give him a call. He makes all the arrangements for shipping it to him also, FedEx shows up and gets it. Very fair on the cost, did not say cheap but very fair and he does first rate stuff. He did a bunch of work for me and I am very pleased.
