A friend of mine recently purchased a new Savage in 6.5x284 Norma and asked me to help him find some good load data, particularly for bullets in the 120 gr. to 130 gr. range.

Neither he nor I have any experience with this cartridge, but I know some of you guys do, so we will appreciate any and all advice as to powders, specific load data, bullets for hunting, loading tips etc.

My friend wants to develope a long-range antelope / deer getter. That's his main purpose.

Thanks for your help.

David

I'm running the following in my 6.5-284:

139gr Scenars
53.5gr '22
Lapua brass
CCI BR2
3.075" (If I recall correctly)

2950ish.

I don't run these for animals, just steel gongs out to 1000yds.

I have shot the throats out of 7 different barrels chambered in 6.5 X 284 shooting long range competition, so I know a little about the 6.5 X 284. I have had the best combination of accuracy and velocity using either H4350, H4831 or VV N160 behind 139/140/142 class of bullets. I use Lapua brass and CCI BR-2 primers. I really feel that VV N160 is a little easier on throats from my experience.

For the 120/123/130 gr. class of bullets I would look to H4350 first. It works very well for a competitor I know and shoot with. He uses it behind the 130 Berger. Additionally that powder works very well in my 260 A.I. behind the 123 Sierra MK. I am getting 3160 fps out of a 28" Krieger barrel.

As expensive as the VV line of powders have become in the last few years, I would probably lean toward H4350 or H4831.

Hope this helps some.

The link below goes to 6mmbr web page. There is a lot of good information there. Hope this helps some. I have found the load data in the loading manuals to be of very little help. The loads shown on the page below pretty much mirror my experiences with the 6.5 X 284. Those loads have pretty much dominated long range competition for the last 8-10 years.

hogdon has alot of data on their website. The norma and the winchester are virtually identical.
