yywhy beavers dig holes

I've been watching trying to get a shot at a beaver, and I noticed that it will dig holes up on the bank about 6 in deep and about 7 or 8 in across, it doesn't fill them in or anything. Can anyone tell me why they do this? Thanks

Most likely he is creating a scent mound in which he digs and eventually fills with leaves and mud and then secretes castor gland fluid for marking his boundries.
