I plan on going Bear hunting for the first time this year in the adirondack mountains. The only large caliber gun i have is a 7.62x54 mosin nagant with a syn stock and a 29 in barrel. Is this round good enough to take down a black bear?

I also have a rem 870 that can reach out 80 yds accurately and had a 2 in group. would the 12 ga be better?

The Russian cartridge is between a .308 and the .30-06 so are they adequate?

I'd say yes with good ammo.

The trouble I see is whether a 29 inch barrel is too unweildly in the woods (I assume woods where you're at).

I have several Russians and my M38 would be my favorite (about 19 barrel).

Even my M44's (not my favorite) would be more handy (though they are heavier than the M38).

I do find the 91/30's to be DEADLY accurate for iron sights so if the 29" barrel does not bother ....... then I'd say go knock out a bear!!
