My 5 year old son Kaleb has been having pains for the last few days in his legs and his arms. It was to the point where he was crying and it hurt him when he would try and run or play. My wife and I took him to the family doctor to get him looked at and the doctor seemed to think it was growing pains. So that was a relief for us. He gave him some meds for the pain and sent us home and told us that he just needs rest and to keep an eye on him. It was time for bed and he seemed to be fine until about 3 in the morning and all of a sudden he shot up and started screaming and said he was hurting. He kept saying daddy daddy, I hurt, I hurt. My ears were on fire and so was my face from being that scared. I had no clue what to do, so i picked him up and off we went as fast as I could to the hospital. The lady at the front desk took him from me and rushed him in the back and the doctor came out to tell us that he was giving him stuff for the pain and that he was going to run all kinds of test to see what was wrong. I was back there why they were doing the test and Kaleb was trying to get up from the bed to get to me because he was scared I was going to leave him. At one point he grabbed me around the neck and would not let go. Now here is my baby scareming for me to pick him up and hold him and they are sticking needles in his arms. At this point I just busted out in tears because here he is crying and scareming and there is nothing I can do to help him, and I think it might have made matters worse becuase when he seen me crying he cried even more. But I could not help but to cry. They asked me to leave the room and that he would be ok and they would come get mw when they were done with everthing.

We waited 2 hours and the doctor and 2 nurses cam out to meet us and told us Kaleb was sleeping right now but they had some bad news. Now I just thought it was what the family doctor told us about growing pains. Atleast thats what i was hopeing. They docotor could not really make eye contact with us when he said Mr. Hickey, your son has what we believe to be bone cancer. My wife hit the floor and lost it, and at that time i don't know what I did. I remember looking foward straight at a wall and thinking, why him, why can't it be me. The doctor was still talkign I think but I did not hear a word he said and I think i even started to say something because my lips were moving but nothing was coming out. I got to go back there when they were done talking and there was my baby boy on a bed with tubes in his body, some of the tubes was for pain and others for something else. They said he was knocked out from the pain meds but he must have sensed when we came in the room because he opened his eyes and wanted me to hold him. It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life when I told him I could not pick him up right now. So I grabbed a chair and sat next to him with my arm across his chest and he wrapped his arms around mine and said daddy dont leave me im scared. He is going to be in the hospital for a while, I am not sure how long. So right now i plan on living at the hospital for as long as it takes. Good news is, it does not look like the cancer has reached a point to where he can not be saved. Doctor said it was at a low stage and there is a chance of him being able to be saved. I told you guys that I was getting him and new puppy because he took it so hard from when Blade died. I had a pup lined up and told him that we would be getting him one soon but he did not know when that was going to be. I was going to send money to the guy to have him shipped to the air port in Indianapolis and just surprise Kaleb with him. Now that I have to stay at the hospital with him, I will not have the money for it.

I just want you all to know that this is more than I can handle right now in my life. I am the kind of man that asks for nothing, but If anyone that has any Jagd pups on the ground right now and would not mind parting with one, please let me know. I would love to see his little face light up when he gets to come home to a new new puppy. This dog would not be for me and I would be willing to pay what money I can come up with or I could even send a little money from time to time to pay the puppy off. Agian guys, there would be no other time I would go to people asking for any favors but I am desperate and you would be making my sons day. I will keep you all informed on his progress as much as I can.

Tim

Tim,
My prayers go out to you and your family! My son got diagnosed with diabetes last year and he is only 6. What we hads to deal with is nothing compared to what you are going through, but I do know how it tears out your heart to see your little baby hooked up to tubes, scared, and needing you there.

Be strong, I don't have pups but will help in trying t find one for you.

I want to thank each any everyone of you guys for your prayers and most of all I want to send a special thanks to the oldman1 (Larry) for what he is doing for my little boy. I had got a call from this nice gentleman stating that he would like to help get my boy a pup for when he is able to come home. I can not thank you all enough, for I need all the prayers and help I can get. I will not forget you guys when there ever comes a time when you are in need.

I will never look at you all the same way ever again. At first, this was a forum of just a bunch of guys that like to talk hunting and make friends. I would like to thick that you guys are not only my new group of friends but a part of my new family as well.

Larry, again words can not express the way I feel on what you and your wife is willing to do for a complete stranger.

The road is going to be ruff and long ahead, but with friends like this is just might make it easier.

In fact Tim my daughter is coming out to see me this weekend and is flying back to Cinn Ohio on Monday if that would put it closer. She can carry it on her lap and it wouldn't cost a dime. 801-910-1501

Your family will be in our prayers. You have a long road ahead of you The best advice I can give is to be strong for your family and spend as much time with your son as you can. That and some prayers will get you through.

First off I want to thank you guys for all of the pms. I have not had time to respond to all of them but I promise I will when I get the chance. Right now I am so tired, I do not know if I am coming or going. I have tried to take little naps here and there but not really working out. You people are truly the best people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. This means more to me than you will ever know.

I would like to think I am a strong man, but this here has made me see even a strong man is a weak one at times like these. I have had so many offers on pups and boy would it make his day to have a petting zoo of pups when he got home LOL. Right now, as it looks the pup I was going to buy for him is going to be taken care of. Devin, if only I could get away, I would take that puppy. Just so he would have double the smile when he gets to come home.

There may be a time in the near future when a little money could help. I know I am going to miss a lot of work and we may need a little food and snacks to take to the hospital, as that is where we will be spending most of our time.

Just a quick update: Kaleb is doing ok this morning, he is drinking his juice and wants to go home to play with his toys. He is still weak. The doc said he is going to be a tuff one to keep down, he sure has a will to get out of this place. I will share more as I get the news.

It is another long night. I can not sleep, so I thought I would get on here before I try and take a nap and let everyone know that a lot of my family came to visit today and it was great to see them. Some of them I have not seen for a few good years. I told each of them about you guys on this forum and they thought the same thing I did. They could not believe how many people have my back and are willing to help a man they have never met. I told them that you guys are not just normal everyday people, I told them you people are just like me (ruff around the edges but soft where it counts LOL). I know I have said this many times, but I feel like I need to say it again. You guys are the best group of people I have ever met in my life, and truly it is a blessing to have you all by my side.

Hey Jerry, I have talked to the man with the puppy I was going to buy. He is still holding him for me. I will call you tomorrow when I get the chance and let you know everything. Thank you guys for all of the offers on pups, I wish I could take them all LOL. He would not know what to do LOL.

Duane, if it is possible, could you pin this topic up on the top of this forum, that way as time goes by I don't have to search for it. I will from now on use this topic to post all updates for Kaleb.

God bless

Tim

I had a great talk with Duane yesterday, thanks Duane, it was great to get my mind off of things for a while.

Well all, today was one of Kalebs sick days. It was not to bad but he was not wanting to eat real good and he slept most of the day. I think me and his mom left his bed side twice all day long. If things work out good this week, I am going to try and pull a few days building a house with my brother just to make what money I can. An old man came up to me today, and he said boy, why such the long face? I looked at him and said buddy my child is sick with the worst kind of thing I can think of. He said, you don't worry about nothing, the power of God is more powerful than any doctor. He said keep the faith and hold your head up high. Then he turned around and walked away without saying another word, he looked back and winked at me right before he walked out of the doors. I don't think I will ever foregt about that as long as I live.

I will keep ya updated more as I hear anything else.

Tim

Man,
that's tough. Prayers sent. My niece survived leukemia at the same age so keep the faith.
Just a thought...
My kids recently brought a dang Chihuahua home from the flea market and I thought that is all we need and why would they bring a dog home when we are surrounded by dogs....
I gave in because I know what it's like to want.
To my surprise the dog is real endearing. She house broke easy and is making a great lil house dog.
Truthfully,
I bet your son just wants something to love. His "own" dog.
Terriers are cute and "can" make good pets but they are a lil WILD in the house. Might want to consider a rescue? It may not cost a thing and a dog bred for companionship may be a better fit for your son than a hard charging Jagd. A rescue is something that is painless and you can get ASAP
All the best to your family.

Main,

Thanks for your prayers, I mean that. But on the other hand I am going to just through this out there. This is not the first time I have owned terriers. I know how wild they can get. I may be wrong, but it seems to me you think you know what my son wants? His "own" dog? Do think for one second that I jumped on this forum, or any other for that matter and asked for help with a puppy for myself? I already had a pup lined up for Kaleb. He was going to be payed for and shipped here in Oct. My son already has 2 house dogs, a pit bull and a doberman. Although he loves them, he knows he can not hunt with them. He may be 5 years old, but he sure knows what a jagd is. After we lost our male jagd Blade. Kaleb was crushed and asked me everyday when I was going to get him another one just like him.

Kaleb knows what the terriers do, and that is hunt. He loves to hunt and be out in the woods with me everytime I go. His face lights up everytime the dogs find anything. If you was to ask him what kind of dog he wants. He would tell you "I want one just like Blade" And sir, let tell ya, with all this little boy is going through right now I think he should get a little light at the end of the tunnel. This puppy is not going to have nothing to do with me at all. My only job will be to feed, water, train, and hunt him (that is with Kaleb).

If for any reason anyone thinks that I may have went over the line with this post, please let me know because that is not what I was trying to do. I may have read Mains post wrong. I will add that I am tired after the day we have had today. But if I am in the wrong, let me know.

God Bless

Tim

Boys! Great news, Kaleb comes home in 3 days. Doc says he is doing good enough that he is going to keep him a few more days to make sure he is still eating good enough and then he is going to cut him loose. We are going to take him for follow ups at Riley Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis. He is ready to get the [beeep] out of here LOL. They would like to start Kemo in about 2 weeks, maybe 3 if they think he is strong enough. We are not out of the woods yet, but atlest he gets to come home! I feel like I have won a million dollars. I will keep you all updated when things as things change.

Kaleb gets to come home tomorrow around 2:00pm. I can not wait and either can he. It will be great to have him home and sleeping in his own bed. Two weeks from now the chemo will start from what they tell me. The doctor says he is doing great but the pain may come and go at home because he is not going to be hooked up to the pain meds they have for him at the hospital. I have a few family members down from Kentucky, so that is going to help out a bunch. I think I am going to start work with my brother on monday. Good thing is, if anything happens while I am at work I can leave and not have to worry about loosing my job. Kaleb is doing good today, but we all wish he would eat just a little more, but as far as drinking a lot he is doing well. I hope when it comes time to pick his new puppy up he is able to ride with me, that would make his day!

Well it is 1:00am and I am still up. Kaleb did not have the worst day today but it was not one of his best ones either. He did not want to do much, or eat much today. For the most part he stayed in bed and only got up to pee, and then right back to bed. he would sleep off and on. I held him most of the day and watched cartoons with him. I have to get up at 5am to start this house we are going to build. Which is right down the road so that is a good thing. I am just kinda watching him sleep right now and making sure he is out for the rest of the night.

Being the father I am my son is my life and he means more to me than anything in this world and I sit here and wonder why it is he has to be sick instead of me. I would take every ounce of pain he is going through just so he would not have to feel a thing. Even with days like this, I know God is going to see us through. I can not bring myself to see it any other way.

Wish me luck guys, I am going to need it to stay sharp while building this house. I do not need anyhting going wrong and getting hurt.

Thanks Tim for the update. I hate to say it and you probably know it but there will be many rocky roads in the future. I know this from experience so believe me when I say you are not alone. There are many out there and even on this forum who have or are walking a similar road. Hang in there my friend, we are are here to help and pray.

Today is the day to meet Kalebs new doctor, and start on the road to making him better. He is scared that we will have to stay at the hospital and says he is not going LOL. I know his mother and I can not wait to get something started with getting him on the road to cancer free. Now is the time prayers will be needed.

I will keep you all updated when we find something out, you guys will be the first to know.

Sorry guys I did not post the update, but these past couple of days has been [beeep] around here. Kaleb has been hurting some and is puking and just feels sick right now so I have been tending to him as much as I can.

Anyways, We got to meet his new doctor and everything went good. Kaleb is going to start chemo soon. They are wanting to shrink the tumors that were found and then when they get small enough, they want to go in to remove them. It is not going to be an easy task, but we have high hopes. That is about all I know for right now.

Duane, sorry I did not get to call you today. It was not a good day at all. I will call you as soon as I get the chance.

Jerry, I will call you to brother.

Kerry, I did not get a chance yet to get to the gun shop, but it will be real soon. I feel like I have so much stuff to do and not enough time to do it all.

Thank you guys for your understanding and thanks for all the prayers that has been sent.

It's been another one of those sleepless nights. Poor boy is up and down. I just wish his meds would kick in so he can sleep. I have been up going on two days and about ready to pass out! If everything is going well in the morning I am going to head into work. For those of you who I am suposed to call hang in there, I have not forgot about ya, I will call you tomorrow as soon as things settle down. Thanks for your prayers.

Tim, I did not see this post till today. Reading Kaleb's story is just breaking my heart. I do know that God answers prayers. I am also a parent and I have spent more time in hospital rooms than I want to remember. Kaleb and all of your family will be in our prayers. It is amazing how tough children are. I wish ya'll all the best and I'll be thinking of Kaleb and his new pup.-----Ben Jimmy

P.S.
Does Kaleb know about the surprise yet? Does he have a name picked out? I am so happy to know his wish is coming true!

Thanks Ben Jimmy, We are going through a lot. I have faith that he can pull through this.

Kaleb has no clue that a new puppy is coming here. I can not wait to see the look on his face. I hope it perks him up. If he is feeling good the day I go to pick the puppy up I am going to take him with me. I can't wait to see what he names this puppy.

Tell Kaleb that he is going to be among an elite group of kids that are "Survivors" and that in the end, he will be stronger than most of his school mates..it will just take time to get there...

Tim, How is your wife? You haven't mentioned her much & I know she is devastated. Watching your child suffer is one of the hardest things parents can endure. Keep your faith in God, in each other, in yourself, and in Kaleb. I know God will do his part. Tell your wife we are praying for her as well. I hope Kaleb is having a good day. If Kaleb is up to it, my grandchildren always beg me to tell them stories. I make up tall tales of danger where the kids are always the hero, because they can run faster, jump higher, see better, etc. than adults can. Many times these tales help them through long trips, or to drift off to sleep when they are sick. I thought maybe Kaleb might like to be the hero in some of ya'lls hunting, camping, or scouting tales. We will be watching for good news. Take care.----Ben Jimmy

Jimmy, Mary is more than devastated. I feel like I am trying to hold us all together. Although she is strong she has days where she does not want to do anything at all but sit and hold him all day long. I am the leaning pole for both of them through all of this. She thanks me everyday for being the kind of father I am.

I can remember my dad when I was little. He was always home every night. He was a true family man. It did not matter if there was 6 feet of snow on the ground and it took him 4 hours to get home he would always be there. There was one time when the snow was so bad my grandma asked him to stay at her house because it was so bad she did not want him stuck on the side of the road. He told her no, I will be fine I got to get home to make sure everyone there is fine.

I am the same kind of man he is when it comes to family. My wife is the same as I am, that is why even though it is tuff on her now, she will keep strong. There are things that she tells me that would just crush most everyone. But those things I made a promise to her I would not say.

Tim, that is the way my parents are. Like you said, I can not remember a single night that Daddy wasn't at home in time for supper. As a child I never thought about it. As an adult I can appreciate that commitment to family. That always comes first. I know having strong parents is a huge comfort for Kaleb. Ya'll are constantly on my mind. We will continue to pray for your family. Wishing ya'll all the best.-----Ben Jimmy

With all that has been going on. I forgot to post that Kaleb will be starting chemo on Thursday. We are happy in a way and in a way it sucks. The reason it sucks is because he is going to be real sick after each treatment. I was just speaking with Jeff, and that is what brought up the topic of when he was going to start chemo. I will keep everyone posted. Mary says hello to all of you and that she is still shocked at what everyone is doing.

Today was a bad day not only for Kaleb, but for me and Mary as well. Some man showed up at the door today. He had a d*ck head look on his face so I stepped outside to talk to him and he informed me that he was here to get our truck for repo. We talked for a few minutes and he asked if I had the money to give to him so he would not have to take it. I said buddy, if I had money right now I would stay up all night and watch it. He jumped on his phone and called some lady so she could talk to me and I held them off for a day or so.

Now if that was not bad enough, right before he went to walk away he said real low (I wish people would make their payments so I would not have to deal with this s*it). Now at first I was going to let it all go, but then something came over me and I told myself (F it). I said hey buddy let tell you something, I have a boy inside this house that is not doing good at all and is going through a lot with having cancer. I told him I told the people at the bank what was going on and if he wanted to smart off again I would have no problem kicking the s*it out of him. He said I don't give a da*mn what he has and what is going on, it looks to me you cannot pay your bills and it is people like you who I have to deal with everyday. I didn't say another word. I just all out punched him right in the mouth and was going to kill this guy but Mary and Kaleb came to the door and Kaleb was scareming his head off from what he was seeing that it made me stop. If it was not for that I would have beat him til he could not move.

I am not the kinda man that does not this often. I have settled down a lot since I had my son and married my wife. But this was my limit, and I am not going to lie it felt good as H*ll at the time. I called the bank back after all of this and told them what took place here and that I have it all on video (which I didnt). But they dont know that. I told them that the guy that came here put his hands on me and that I kicked his a** and sent him on his way. If they want to press charges, I was going to as well LOL. So far nothing not even a phone call from these people. We have to be at the hospital tomorrow and that is all I am thinking about. So the rest can just wait. If they were to take my truck today, I would have not been able to get anywhere, as that is my only truck right now.

Tim,
I am sorry that had to happen to you guys. The truck isn't the important part, your family is and that guy got what he deserved. Karma will catch up to that A=hole. Keep your spirits up for Kaleb and Mary, they need you more than you know.

It was good to visit with you to buddy. We are heading out the door in the next few minutes to head up to Kalebs first treatment. I will keep you all posted on how things go. It took us 15 minutes to get him to stop crying because he did not want to go. I think he thinks he has to stay there and he is scared about it. Talk at ya'll later.

We went today for Kalebs first chemo treatment and everything went well other than now he is tried as all get out. He says he hurts a little bit and feels a little sick. The doc told us that was some of the things he would feel. He is going to want to sleep for a few days more than what he does any other time. It was not a fun trip, I think all of us were a little scared but we are just glad it went well. He should be having back to back treatments from here on out until they think it is time to go in and remove it. Poor little guy acts like he got hit by a truck. We are just going to lay in bed and watch home alone and try and get some sleep.

Tim, I am so sorry to hear what a hard day you've all had. I know chemo is hard on even the strongest adults. It is so hard to see your baby suffer & not be able to do anything to fix it for him. Ya'll are always in our thoughts and prayers.-----Ben Jimmy

Well all I thought i would bring you another update. Kaleb has another day of chemo on Thursday of this week. He is not looking forward to it but we promised him ice cream after so I think he is not going to give us any trouble over it now LOL. So far things have been going good for him. We have all had the flu bug going on here and it has been hard to shake so since I was the last one to get it I had to sleep on the couch. We, as well as the doctor has high hopes that Kaleb will pull through, which is great for us to hear because I (myself) do not know what I would do if he didn't.

PS I got the money that you all have donated and believe me it has helped more than you guys will ever know. Thank you all very much. I will keep you all updated.

I just found out I pick Kalebs pup up Thursday at 1:45pm. So Mary is going to take him to chemo and I will try like [beeep] to beat them back home so when he opens the door there his pup will sit waiting for him on the couch. This could not have worked out better. This will perk him up!!! I just cant wait.

Just an update since you guys have not had one for a while. Only reason for that is because not much has changed since last time. Kaleb is doing good except now he is sick as a dog with the flu and the chemo treatment (we cannot wait until the chemo is done!) There may be another doctor that is going to help his doctor now with the surgeries that he will have to undergo. I went out last night to get a couple of cheese burgers because he said he was hungry, I think he got a bite down and that was all he could eat. It just kills me to see him this way and I can do nothing about it. The doctor told us he was going to get sick easier than he would any other time because his system does not respond as fast.

On a good note though, he may not need as many treatments because the tumors are in fact shrinking. His mother and I can not wait until the surgery can be done and we can just leave this whole memory in the past.

As always I will keep everyone updated when things change.

Thank you to everyone for everything.

Tim
