.30-06 Reloading Data

Rifle has a 1 in 11 twist.

Looking for some 30-06 reload data starting points. Havent had much luck with IMR4350 but picked up some IMR4064 to try. Any other powders that are worth looking at?

I will be loading 165gr SSTs, Nosler ballistic tips and 168 Accubonds.

This gun will mostly be used for white tail and hogs but would like to be able to shoot targets and stuff out to 500ish yards.

Thanks
Kyle

I started using RL22 a few years back. And I picked up a little velocity. It was not any more accurate than the old stand by's. But it did yield about 100 fps more velocity. Loads are listed on the Nosler web site. I used the 165 BT's in a couple of my 30-06's. Tom.

One of the most classic 30-06 loads of all time is 57gr IMR 4350 under a 165gr bullet. Have you tried it?

I've never seen a 30-06 that won't shoot 165-168 gr bullets well with 57-58gr 4350......

I started at 52 or 53grs and worked up to like 56? I had the best group at 55.5. I will try 57grns with what 4350 i have left.

I already have the 4064 so any suggestions on a load for that powder?

Shot 30-06 in NRA Highpower matches for many years. My favorite load w/168 gr. Sierra Match kings was 47 gr. 4895. Sierra manual gives starting load @ 42.2 gr (2400 fps) and 47.4 gr. max.(2700 fps).

Used 53 gr. IMR4350 w/the SMK 168's for 600 yd. load (2660 fps chronographed). Sierra shows start load @ 48.7 gr. & max 55.7.

The best 600 to 1000 yd. load was 53 gr. H450 behind a 190 gr. SMK (2550 fps chronographed). Book listed 2500 fps for this load but my (26" barrels) got avg. 2580. Sierra lists 49.1 start and 55.0 max. Unfortunately H450 no longer available.

The 30-06 is quite versatile when it comes to loads.

Forgot to mention previously that I always had to cut the loads for my target rifles 2-3 grains to avoid pressure signs.

Checked my data for a hunting Mod. 70 and found that I used 57.5 gr. 4350 w/150 gr. NP bullet(2900 fps). Nosler manual shows start 53.5 gr. and max 57.5 gr which was listed as most accurate (that was true in my rifle, as well).

Nosler shows start for 168 gr. bullet and IMR4064 as 46.0 gr & max. of 50.0.
Nosler's start for 168 gr. bullets and IMR4350 is 53.0 gr & max @ 57.0.

My rifle shoots the 150gr Sierra's with 58.5gr of H4350 under 1/2 groups consistantly. 48gr of IMR4064 shot the 150's well, but not as good as the H4350 load.

That is a well known recipe for the 06' that just flat works. You could sub in a decent 180 gr. bullet for the 165 if you felt the need and do as well.

I have about 150 165to 168gr bullets at the moment but when i run out of those i will try out the 180s. Will my 1:11 twist stabalize the 180gr bullets? I would sure like the higher BC of the 180grs if i could to shoot at targets at 500+yards.

Awesome. I will get the 180s next time i buy bullets.

What kind of bullets do you guys suggest for target shooting at 500+ yards? I would like to be able to reach out 1000 someday so is there one that will preform well at both ranges?

190 gr. Sierra Match Kings.

3" spotter disc placed in each succesive shot in NRA 600 yd. prone match (iron sights, no artificial support). 15th shot hit the wooden spindle. Work equally as well to 1000 yds.

Works for me.

Agreed. I have had very good luck with the H4350 powder in place of the IMR. It seems to be a tad bit slower though but always work up.

Went to the range yesterday and shot some groups. Started at 56.5 grs and worked up to 58grs of IMR 4350. All with REM 9.5 primers and 165gr Nosler Accubonds. Average group size was 2in. Usualy groups hover around an inch even when shooting factory ammo.

These were some of the worst groups i have ever shot. I am not saying i am a great shot but can normaly group them better then this. My groups usualy hover around an inch.

Today on my way back from class i stopped by the gun store and picked up some federal 210 primers, Winchester LR primers and some CCI 200. I am going to repeat the test this thursday and see if i can get some tighter groups.
