Iowa Animal Fighting Bill Amended to Protect Hunting
with Dogs- (04/12)
Iowa

As Iowa's 2002 legislative session wrapped up, the
U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance convinced state legislators
to stop a bill that would have banned hunting with
dogs. It was another in a nationwide wave of animal
cruelty bills that could have had an adverse impact on
hunting and trapping because of its wording.
Senate File 2268 seeks to ban dog fighting and chicken
fighting. It would have also banned all hunting with
dogs, field trialing and more. The U.S. Sportsmen's
Alliance's lobbying effort succeeded in obtaining an
exemption to protect sporting dog activities.

Animal rights groups were anxious to have the bill
advance through the House. Many Des Moines media
outlets ran stories about the legislature's lack of
action on the issue. Legislators responded by calling
for a vote, which could have brought about the
nation's first wholesale ban on hunting with dogs in a
state.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance's lobbyist met with
House Majority Leader Christopher Rants (R-Sioux City)
and other pro-sportsman legislators who agreed to hold
Senate File 2268 until new language was drafted to
exempt sporting dogs. The exemption amendment was
drafted and added to the bill before its passage.
