PRESCOTT - A dwindling pronghorn antelope herd will not be relocated, State Game and Fish officials decided.
A panel appointed to study the issue concluded that moving the Willow Lake herd would be more detrimental than leaving the animals alone, said Prescott Field Supervisor Eric Gardner.
The herd was monitored for the past year and despite encroaching development, loss of habitat and coyote attacks, not one of the antelope attempted to leave the area.
Moving the herd, made up mostly of older adults, would cause a higher than normal mortality rate during and after their capture, Gardner said.
At last count the herd consisted of 26 does and 15 bucks. Not a single fawn survived this past year's breeding season.
Gardner said Game and Fish will continue to monitor the herd.
