growl cough

has any one ever heard a growl cough from a mountain lion?
i had a lion come to my calling today outside sundance wyoming and it made two growls then kept making a coughing sound.
what is it? a warning, mating call, or just why would it keep repeating the coughing sound?
I've had lions come before but never this vocal.
