A few weeks ago I had stated I was having problems holding down a certain animal (I said cat) that has escaped from me 3 times & now the 4th.. this time he didn't even spring the trap he just left a print. Keeps pulling out of 1.5's and #3s.
The print isn't very good but I'm hoping you can help me figure it out. I tried my best to outline the print with sticks and the print is a bit on the trap jaw

It rained last night when he had stepped in the mud, today it pretty much dried out.

When I placed my hand over the top of this print..his was wider then mine and the tops of the prints goes up as the bend in my fingers. This set isn't even near the others where I was having him run off from, I'm trapping this whole section and this is half way through it.

I forgot, what is your pan tension set at, I use 3lbs, I don't have any escapes since I went to 3 lbs. Some of mine are caught higher than the ankle. If they have the pads in, they shouldn't get out.

If this track is wider than your palm and goes to the second knuckle then it is either a large dog or a smaller lion and if you are targeting bobcats then I would say lion. If you have been losing it then almost for sure lion a dog would probably not fight the trap to hard.

Tactical my pan tension is set at 4lbs..if you notice in this picture he was standing facing what would be west and my trap is set n/s.

thinkinthebox hubs was with me and his jaw dropped when he seen this print. He looked and looked for claw marks and he couldn't find one.

Oklahoma swears we don't have lions... unsure

Oklahoma may be wrong and probably are the only track that is that large is that, or a great prianese dog that they use to protect sheep, good luck on the mystery let us know what you find. Are you trying to get cats or are these set for coons.

cat..that is actually a bait hole set if the pic would have been taken facing N/S you'd be able to see it.
I don't have any coon sets out now.

Thanks will do

From what I can make out PM, you have a lion your dealing with. good luck with that one, hope you start carrying a bigger gun. and if ya get that being watched feeling again, take it seriously and look around hard at anything and everything.

when I see the pic and read your discription, I first thought wolf, then you said no claw marks, I have seen both and am really thinking lion. good luck and post pics when ya finally nail it thumbup

I really should keep something bigger then the .17hmr on me..it looks mean though cool
I get that feeling so much though it's hard to pin point where it's even coming from.
We don't have wolves either.... so whatever it is it don't exist. Right?? That makes it a ghost lol

If I manage to win I'll post pics.... thumbup
Next is the trail cam, I need to beg hubs into letting me set it out there and see if at least I can get pics of my ghost.

any ideas on how to make him stay put?

Whatever it is set out your trailcam and get a picture of it. It may just jump into your trap smile. It looks like it is trap savey whatever it is.

Looks like you may have to use a really big drag with your MB750, and, locate someone who has some cat hounds. That approach(cat hounds) might resolve this problem a little quicker. You've got your self an interesting problem there. Just curious, what size trap would hold a mountain lion anyway? Great Pyrenees dogs like to roam when on duty. IF(big if) its one of those? Those sheep, or whatever its guarding, could be miles from you... More 2cts worth....................................................

The MB is on some REALLY REALLY BIG stakes...dbl staked at that.

You mean go looking for him on purpose scared
I'd walk right into the lions den.....and I would require someone who runs slower then myself. lol I'm kidding.
Really I don't know anyone with hounds, and I'm not real sure what the legal laws are.
I have no idea what size of trap it takes to hold one.
If this MB won't there is nothing else I can try, due to jaw size. I figure I'll be trapping him till he just old and worn out finally just gives in.

I have trapped a Great Pyrenees before.. he's a porch guard, big ol' lovable polar bear (I call him)
He never fought the trap, he just waits for us to get there and whimpers a bit gives us a big thank you when he's released and off to the house. plus these don't look like his prints.

I've notice Oklahoma has been doing extensive research on the lions. The sightings and attacks have greatly improved in the past few years. This is just one of many articles I was reading..
this one lead to the conclusion that they are a repopulating here and later lead to Senate Bill 1296

No my kitty sets are in those canyons still buried in 3ft snow drifts...and the cliffs are one solid ice sled. Look down see nothing down there to heck with the sliding down hills.
But it really started to melt yesterday so today most all of them will be reset.

Yah, I wouldn't want to part with my Cummins, might keep it when I get the new 6.7, some day! I like the manual trans. I changed my clutch linkage today, I always knew a hydrolic clutch linkage would fail sooner or later. I had a spare one from when I had my '01 Cummins. See the cougar tracks again?

there aint enough mud on that truck tt2, if I had a real truck like that, I might have made it to work today. instead the 12 inches of snow and 8 foot drifts got me crynow if this [beeep] wind would die down, I would go shovel and at least get the jeep out.

PM, what day should be expect pics of a pissed off kitty cat??????

and YES PLEASE HOT SUMMER FISHIN PICS. hahahahh. sneaky2 lol

It's a girly truck wub it's so pretty all covered in mud.. since here in this part of the country we see someone with mud on a truck we have to ask where they found it. drool
We have a storm comin tomorrow tongue_smilie
..freezing rain and another 6" on top of what's left from the last two storms this past week.

How do you use one of those shovels? Where do ya plug the thing in?
I've watched people say they where using them many times and yep, I can stand there leaning on it with the best of them.. but I can't figure out how the hole gets there. unsure

Hopefully with in a few days.. cool

I'll be posting pics on facebook later today of all the pretty snow crazy before I start digging out.

So what are OK's laws on cougars? Are they protected? They are not here, I hope I get to try my T20 on one, someday! I trapped in Wy 10 times, but never saw a cougar. Caught 48 bobcats after buying licenses.

you can kill them if they're preying on or about to prey on stock or you feel you are in danger.Thenyou are supposed to call a warden and they will come take a tooth for research.Oh yeah,I'm always in fear when I see one!!!

Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation listed the mountain lion as a game species with a closed season to keep low harvest of the lion. However, if you are in the presents of a mountain lion they are legal to take..they are considered a danger.
When you go to the rules of taking a lion it refers you straight to the general furbearers regulations..
legal trap sizes and cat hounds rules..
When I spoke the game warden about this he explained it this way to me..
run bobcats hounds and run into a lion..it's game. If it steps in a legal size trap it's game.. deer hunting ones jumps it's game..
the game warden must be called before the body is moved. The game warden will tag the animal at that time with documentation of the kill.

In 1996 Oklahoma legalized senate bill 1296 .. the Emergency legalization of River Otter and the Limit Sport Harvest of Mountain Lions..
http://www.oksenate.gov/legislation/votes/votes_2006/01830.pdf
However this is all I know about the sport hunt of the lions. I've been told they are still in the process of gathering all information..the population, assessed habitat, sightings, attacks---us/hunters giving them all the documentation of the lion as we can will help the state on this.
BASICALLY THEY SAY PROVE IT!!

What we don't understand is it is really up to us as hunters to let them know what wild animals are out there, what they are doing, and how they are doing it.
It's not all about the kill....as much as I would like to have it if I don't I would like to gather as much proof as possible... Study the animal, the areas.. taken pics of the canyons, tracks & any signs of, around if I can come up with enough documentation I'll show them all my work on what I find on him/her through out time. I learned a lot about all my other animals out there, now there is another one that seems to want my attention so I'm willing to give it to it.

If it kills our cattle it's always game.

I was wondering what the terrain looked like there.Better than being flat ground. It seems it is easier to call coyotes where there is more cover and hilly ground.
