decoying crows

Yes, I have two now...and am going to buy a dozen more as soon as funds permit. A little more difficult to take care of in the field, but really helps with those call shy birds in my area. Currently, just using the two frocked decoys and a foxpro and doing the shoot and scoot.

Flocking decoys are very easy to do. I do alot of goose hunting and have flocked the tails of about 4 dozen decoys.. Just getting back into crow hunting, and I am going to flock about a half dozen as soon as my pound of black flock gets here..

Eric,
Can you explain that process? They factory jobs run about $14.00 each! You can usually get three regular type for that price. If it is easy and inexpensive to do it would be worthwhile to do it yourself.

yeah i would like to know too! i just cant spend 14 bucks for one decoy. i bought 5 carry lite decoys from a local store for 23 bucks!!

jr202- when we had alot of fields without houses in the background, i would only shoot them with a 17 hmr. didnt decoy or call. i would just see them in the bean fields feeding on cold days and i would go to town....just like prairie dog shooting:)

I use a 20ga Beretta, with Rem. Heavy Dove #6's, out of an improved cylinder. I rarely pass shoot, but always hunt with 12-24 decoys and an e-caller. I have a half dozen flocked decoys in my spread, but haven't seen incoming crows favor that side of the spread. My other decoys are mostly Flambeaus with a few Carrylites. Many of the crows I shoot are coming in to the speaker, not the decoys.

Yeah that's what I would like to try since prairie dogs don't exist here. I guess I could put some decoys out in a cut corn field to draw 'em in about 75-100yds out or so. I'd like to get the old hmr out. Something about a live target as oppossed to paper...makes it a lot more fun:)

Ok.. The first thing you need is flock... This is the cheapest place I have found it. You could get a 1/4 pound, but I bought the one pound to redo some goose decoys...
http://www.vandykestaxidermy.com/product/107047/black-flock
Then you need to get some flat black rustoleum paint, I usually get a quart. Looks like this...
http://rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=150&sid=7776730
Then you need a tote of some sort, big enough to fit the decoy in, with a little bit of extra lengt and width on the sides, but not a real tall one.. Then you need a oil brush, and some rubber gloves. What you are going to do is paint everywhere that you want the flock. You do not want to do the eyeballs or beak, get a small thing of semigloss black to do those.. Once you "paint" the decoy where you want the flocking, you get the flocking ready. What I do is dump most of the flocking in the tote, and while holding the decoy over it, I sprinkle or just cover the decoy with the flocking... Some people do it differently here, but this is how I do it. Once I get alot of the flock on the decoy, I squeeze the flocking onto the decoy with my hands (here is where you want the gloves). Once I squeeze it on real good, I shake the decoy over the tote to get the excess off.. I usually let the decoys dry for a couple of days.. I shake them again after a couple of days, and if I miss some spots, I just put some paint over the spot, and repeat the process.. You want to use the flat paint, so if you knock off the the flocking, it is just flat black underneath it.. If anyone is in the central Ohio area, I can show you how to do it in person..

Here is a pic of before and after flocking. The one on the left is flocked the one on the right is not.

Here is a good pic of the Flocked GHG decoys with some real dead decoys. In the pic you can see how well the flocking matches the real birds.

Here is a real good pic of the GHG Aggressive Caller. They are $14.99 at Cabela's. Worth the money if you don't already have decoys.

Then with the right decoying and calling you could end up with numbers like this.

Crows%20222%20dead_web.jpg

Ya, that's 222 spelled out in dead birds. Got to love the Texas Crow Patrol. Thous guys get it done.

I like those "Metro" barrels in the first picture. That is a fine looking decoy, how easily can they be damaged? Can you toss them in a backpack/decoy bag or do you need a slotted type carry bag?

When I ordered my GHG decoys, I went ahead and ordered a decoy bag to carry them in.

My buddy just throws his around. I figured that I would atleast try to take some care of them. His has lasted for a good time now and we have put some major hunts on them.

But one of the real tricks to decoying is the Buster. You got to have a Buster in you bunch.

I mean don't you want to end up at the end of the day with this.

Any motion crow in a good spread really drives them in. That little bit of action will catch the eye of any crow and where there is one, there's two. It is defiantly, the more the merrier.

Quick tip to the wise, don't forget about putting your sentries up in the trees. All crows on the ground will always have a look out.

Now don't for get to leave out the old friend of the crow. Mr.Owl or Mr.Hawk. These can prove to be very deadly in decoying crows. A good crow and owl fight will bring them in from miles away.

You can pick them up cheap at Wal-mart and with some extra time and a little imagination you can flock or rather feather your owl.

Now that is something to put into your spread.

Here is a list of Decoys starting with the Ureaduck line of decoys.

From what I have seen and used the Ureaduck line is built really good. The 3D is bigger than the Buster. I just found out about the Happy Hooker. Hopefully they will be at the show in March so I can get my hands on one. If it looks as good in hand as it does on the web I will buy one.

I have to ask how you set the decoys on the upper branches?

My experience was exactly like that of GC and for the same reason. Due to Bob Aronsohn of Crowbusters fame I tried a couple of boxes of Nitro 27's in 7 1/2 shot and immediately my body count doubled over using heavy dove #6's.

I also read in one of the Crowbusters newsletters (I was a member there for a couple of years. Don't know why I am not now.) and someone did a pattern test on crow sized targets at 40 or 50 yards. The Nitro 27 in 7 1/2 put the most pellets in the target of all tested.

I'm glad to see some of the frocked decoys as I have heard of them but have never seen any. My owl decoy is a Halloween sale item from Micheals and it has read feathers. Drives them nuts when they see it.

Can't say I understand the flocked decoys. After watching live crows, they shine in sunlight, they are not "dull". I cleaned my decoys thoroughly and applied spray polyurathane to make them shine and my sucess went up greatly. I think they shine like a live crow.
