How 'bout the .270 AI?

After reading the question about the .270 Wby, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the .270 A.I.? The old .270 is pretty impressive as it is for medium sized game...

The 270 bullet line up isnt that great. You might consider a 280AI for a better choice in bullets. I loved my 280AI.
If thats too big, maybe a 6.5mm 06 AI? Getting to be lots of bullet designs for it too.

.277 bullets are starting to show up, especially in the VLD line. However bullet choice is still lacking in that caliber. If you want one go for it

There are plenty of bullets to choose from in .277" diameter. The .270 AI is easy to load for, and easy to shoot. In a long barrel you will gain 150fps or more. In a 22-24" barrel you will likely gain 80-120fps. We have taken many sage poodles beyond 1000 yards with 135gr. Sierra MatchKings or re-sized 150gr. 7mm Berger VLD's. I can push the 135gr Sierra to about 3425 in a 30" Kreiger. The 150gr Berger will safely fly 3275 from the same barrel.

Berger is now producing a line of .277" bullets, removing the need for expensive bullet sizing equipment. Is there a real difference between the .270 AI, 6.5-06 AI, or the .280 AI? Not really. There are plenty of good components available for all of them. All of them have similar trajectories. All of them are capable of good accuracy and precision.

Thanks all! I have a pre 64 m70 Winchester in '06 that I want to make something out of. The .280 AI is still on top of the short list at this time but having shot a lot of game with a .270 I was just thinking.... I value the thoughts presented here and Thanks again!

It would be nice if they made a heavier VLD bullet in .257 and .277 for custom barrels. They make heavy VLD bullets for 6mm and 6.5mm that require a 1:8 twist.

I have often wanted the same thing. Corbin will make you a sizing die for about $600.00 that will size 7mm bullets to .277". Of course then you will also need the $2000.00 press to go with it. Then, there are only a few barrel makers that will cut a custom twist for you. The .270 barrels are almost all 1:10.
