I recently received permission on lots of land that has a pile of yotes running around there. I normally shoot a 22-250 or 243 for yotes but with the amount of people in the area, I'd like to go with something a bit quieter. I know that when land-owners give permission that they should also be ready to hear gun-shots but I'd like to keep the noise to minimum. I was thinkin 22 mag, or 17 hmr, maybe even 221 or 17 fireball. Shots at the most will be 150 yds. What do you guys think?

My first choice for that distance and low volume would be the 22 hornet. Especially in a longer barrel like the Ruger lam/target grey 77/22H (forgot the model #) or a TC single shot.

You can always improve it if you want a little more umph, and they are a lot of fun to shoot at other stuff too.

Yup, a hornet would be good. My friend has one and I've seen him have complete pass throughs on a coyote. I was surprised.

The same guy also has a 17 Fireball. The muzzle blast from that rifle is as bad as his 204 and 221FB

Of the calibers you mentioned in your post, I'd use the 22 mag and keep the shots a little closer than 150 yards. Part of the fun of calling is getting them in close....right!!?? grin

Another guy I know only uses a 22 mag. No center fires at all. He shoots fox, bobcats and coyotes. But most of his shots are 50 yards or less.

Good hunting!

buy yourself a supressor (if legal in your area) and handload some (or get some one to do it for you ) down subsonic and problem solved smile

i belive it is 1200 or 1000 fps .. if the rounds is still super sonic you get that crack when it breaks the sound barrel

I use a Hornet, 222mag and 243 for my coyotes hunting. The Hornet gets the call on smaller properties where the landowner wants to keep the noise down.

I've used the Hornet for close to 15 years. Based on my experience with it on coyotes, I try to limit my head-on shots to 100yds or so, and a broadside shot to about 175yds.

try a 300 whisper, even at 1700 fps they sound like a 22mag. 150 yds should be perfect for the whisper at that speed. i shoot mine subsonic and kill red foxes,i know yotes are different critters,at 100yds and drops them in there tracks. i don't have much experience with yotes but i imaging they are somewhat close to a fox

If the ranges are reasonable I would start with the 22 Mag. Then I would move up to a Hornet and next a .221 Fireball. I have never shot a .17 Fireball, so I can't say how loud they are. My .221 Fireball is a dream to shoot and it is not loud or blasty at all. In a handgun may be a different story. I had a .204 and sold it because it was much louder/blasty than I expected it would be. Bought the Fireball and would never switch back.

I forgot all about the 22 hornet! That'd be a really good calibre for those areas. The property's are fairly closed in and 150 would be max. I've used a 22 mag before and really liked it for yotes, plus a guy can shoot a heavier bullet.
Gonna have start looking for a 22 hornet.

Speed of sound at sea level is 1125fps. If you load to 1000fps you should be good. Along with the 22Hornet the 218Bee would also be a good one to look into.

Good choice! I have a Ruger Hornet, target gray model with the heavy barrel. It shoots the 46 gr. WW componet HP at 2750 fps over 10.6 gr. of W-296 into a nice 1" circle at 100 yards. It is not my go to calling rifle, but where I know the shots will be 125 yards on in, it is the cat's whiskers!

It is NOT a .223 or 22-250, but as with any shot, placement is the key. This bullet, placed behind the shoulder on a coyote, fox or cat will result in a dead critter within 30 or 40 yards, or DRT, period.

As long as you don't try to make the little Hornet something it is not, you will really enjoy this caliber!

Good Luck!

DD
