do we still have a 3 shell limit when hunting predators with a shotgun in AZ? I know for birds i do, but could not find it in the regs. thanx

thanx for the link but got that already..permanently!! yeah, the 5 rounder i had to read a couple of times whether or not it was 5 rounds in the mag or 4 in the mag one in the pipe like upland birds, 2 in the tube one in the pipe. reason i ask is that i'm redoing my 835 and while it is apart waiting for the new barrel i took out the plug. just don't need mr game warden on me, he seems to have me on his GPS wherever i go.

I took the plug out of mine for hunting predators. But, by all means make sure you verify it for yourself.

So, I did a little digging for ya.

I think this answers your questions-

R12-4-304D. An individual may take predatory and furbearing animals
by using the following methods, subject to the restrictions
in R12-4-318:
1. Firearms not prohibited in R12-4-303;
2. Bow and arrow;
3. Crossbow;
4. Traps not prohibited by R12-4-307; and
5. Artificial light while taking raccoon, if the light is
not attached to or operated from a motor vehicle,
motorized watercraft, watercraft under sail, or floating
object towed by a motorized watercraft or a
watercraft under sail.

R12-4-303
Unlawful Devices, Methods, and Ammunition
A. In addition to the prohibitions prescribed in A.R.S. §§
17-301 and 17-309, the following devices, methods, and
ammunition are unlawful for taking any wildlife in this
state. An individual shall not use or possess any of the
following while taking wildlife:
1. Fully automatic firearms, including firearms capable
of selective automatic fire;
2. Tracer, armor-piercing, or full-jacketed ammunition
designed for military use;
3. Shotguns larger than 10 gauge or shotguns capable
of holding more than five shells in the magazine,
unless plugged with a one-piece filler that cannot
be removed without disassembling the gun, and that
limits the magazine capacity to five shells;
4. Semiautomatic centerfire rifles with a magazine
capacity of more than five cartridges, unless the
magazine is modified with a filler or stop that cannot
be removed without disassembling the magazine;
5. Contrivances designed to silence, muffle, or minimize
the report of a firearm; (deleted irrelevant content)

It looks like there IS a magazine capacity for shotgun when hunting predators in AZ, and that limit is 5 rounds in the magazine...I'm glad I looked. Sorry if I mislead you.

The shotgun round capacity limit for Arizona is 5 rounds in the magazine plus 1 in the barrel. See Commission Rule R12-4-303A3 on page 106 in the regs.

If hunting migratory birds, the maximum shotgun capacity is 2 in the magazine plus 1 in the barrel. The definition of a Migratory bird is on page 93 in ARS 17-101B10.

Quail are not migratory birds so you are good to go with 6 rounds in your shotgun for hunting quail, rabbits, predators, and furbearers. Be watching for proposals to allow taking mountain lions with a shotgun shooting shot. It is NOT legal yet, but there might be changes to allow that in the future.

Hope this helps and good hunting!

thanx fursniper...i have for the past 12 years hunted quail with 3! it is just a carryover from dove, but late season dove and quail combine so i would think you would have to use 3 when the "If it flys it dies" season here in AZ.
