Shotgun Loads for Coyote

As mentioned in a post a while back in the Night Hunting Section, I'm going to start hunting with a shotgun a little more this year, especially since it's basically my only "ethical" option for night hunting coyotes here in WV. I can't decide if I want to use my Rem 870 or Win 1300, and figured I'd test different loads in each, check the patterns, and let that be the deciding factor on which gun to use.

I'm probably going to test with:
- Hevi Shot Dead Coyote
- Federal Premium V-Shok Coyote Shot
- Remington Wingmaster HD

Are there any other loads you guys would recommend or that you have had good success with?
Thanks!!

I use Federal 3"Mags with 1 7/8oz. BB Lead.

Gets the job done and its cheaper than all these fancy boutique "coyote loads" Which is just another way to your wallet. 30 some bucks for 10 shots...................I dont think so. I paid between 25 and 30 for a box of 25.

I use Dead Coyote loads in T shot that are awesome up to at least 45 or so yards! It patterns better than anything I've ever shot!

I agree with Furhunter. The Federal Premium 1-7/8 oz of lead copper coated BB's are a very good coyote load. You can buy a box of 25 Federal Premium BB's for less money than a box of 10 shells in the heavier than lead stuff. I can't shoot lead loads anymore at coyotes so now the Remington Wingmaster HD 3" BB loads are my first choice for coyotes.

I like the Rem BB and T. For the last couple of years they were giving rebates of 15 dollars per box if you mailed it in. I bought 4 boxes of each over a 2 year period and with the limited amount of shooting here in the east it is OK with me at about $1.50 a shot. If I was able to get more shots I would probably use the Federal loads also.

The patterns from the Remington loads just cover a full size coyote target at 45 to 50 yards, very impressive.

I agree with Furhunter....I use that same load myself, as well as 3" 4 Buck...with that said, one of my high school classmates worked for the USDA as an ADC specialist for 16 years in Grant, Nebraska.

Suffice it to say, he shot a LOT of coyotes, both out of an airplane and calling over those 16 years.

His favorite load was 2 3/4" Federal Premium Copper Coated BB's.

Good Luck with your search!

berettaman,
What shotgun (brand & model), barrel length and choke tube are you using?

Often with shotguns, if you find someone that's getting awesome patterns, that combination needs to be copied, due to there being so many variables with shotguns.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

Plated lead Number Four Buckshot, lead BB, Dead Coyote T's, Wingmaster HD in either BB's or T's, Winchester X-tended B's, Federal Heavyweight, it can drive a feller crazy. They'll all do well with some pattern and choke work as long as you keep yourself to a reasonable range.

I have anchored Yotes out to sixty yards with this load.

Thanks for all the help guys!! I'll definatly give the Federal 3" Mag 1 7/8 a try! I'll still be using my rifle while hunting during the day. I'm just looking for a good solid load that will do it's job out to around 40 yards for night hunting. I have no plans of a 75 - 80 yard shot. Coyotes aren't nearly as thick here as what most of you guys out west have, so paying the high price for shells isn't really that much of an issue in my opinion.

For example:
Say I kill six coyotes a year on average with a rifle while daylight hunting now. Everyone say's my success rate will go up if I start night hunting. Ok, say I have a really good year and double my success rate with night hunting. So at the end of the year I've killed six with a rifle and six with a shotgun for a total of 12 (a very good year). And just for good measures we'll say half of the shotgun kills required 2 shots. So I've killed 6 shotgun coyotes and shot nine times. At $3.50 a shot that's only $32.00. And say I run through another 10 shots checking my pattern and playing with chokes... That's 19 shots at $3.50 a piece, for a total of $66.50 to double my success rate. I spend 4 times that much every year on calls, scent killer, camo, fuel, etc...

Now imagine your only getting 10 bucks a piece for those 6 hides. It just cost you more to kill them than what they are worth, that is of course forgetting about all other expenses.

I'm not saying that I have more money than common sense, I do understand where you're coming from. I'm not trying to start an argument over this Furhunter. And I fully agree with you that $3.50 a shot is expensive, and could/will get costly. I think you're missing my point. I was asking for suggestions of other loads that you guys have had good success with. Not what is your opinion on the price of Dead Coyote loads. It's not set in stone that I'm going to use the most expensive loads I can find. Yes, the loads I listed were all on the more expensive side. But that doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to hunt with them. I'm going to try alot of different loads with alot of different prices associated with them and see which gives the best pattern in my gun. Hopefully a cheaper load will work best in my gun, but if it doesn't and a more expensive load out performs, then that's is what I will use. It's not the fact that if I shoot a coyote twice with a $3.50 load, that I'm losing money. It's the fact that if a $3.50 load is what performs the best in my gun, and will do an ethical job on a coyote at 40 yds, then I am willing pay that price! I don't hunt to make money from furs. If that was the case, then I'd have gone out of business along time ago! Hunting is my hobby, and I do it for the fun and enjoyment. What little money I make at the end of the year from furs is just a bonus to all the joys I already got from hunting that year. There's no possible way any of us could ever make more from hunting, than what we invest into it. We don't compare the price of fur to the vehicle we drive to our stand, the guns we hunt with, the endless amount of money we spend on calls, camo, gas, food, or the labor hours we spend in the woods. So if a $3.50 load performs best in my gun, then that is what I'm going to use. I'd rather say this coyote cost me an extra $7.00, than to say I wounded one and it got away, but it only cost me $1.25 to do it.

I just searched for rebates for coyote loads and found some on Hevi-Shot's web-site. $10.00 cash back on two boxes of Dead Coyote, $10.00 cash back on two boxes of the new 2-3/4" Maximum Defense loads and up to $20.00 cash back on two boxes of the Hevi-Shot Waterfowl Loads. The 3" "B" waterfowl loads will work on coyotes. The new 1 oz Maximum Defense loads of "T" shot are going to be a great coyote load for recoil sensitive shooters. All of this ammo has to be purchased between July 1st and August 31st and the request for the rebates have to get to Hevi-Shot by September 15th 2009.

No worries, wasn't offended one bit at all. Appologies to you if it came across wrong

. Just wanted you to understand I'm not boasting the high dollar loads. Me and my wallet would much rather shoot the cheaper loads, but I am willing to spend more for better performance. That's the problem with text, you can't feel the emotion, and often times assume the worst! As with most everyone here, I'm just a simple guy looking for new tips and techniques! Wouldn't step on anyone's toes on purpose!!

Derbyacresbob-
Thanks for the heads-up, and for the website link!

I have Patternmaster chokes for all my shotguns. I only own Remington so that is what I can speak to. I have had Briley, Dead Coyote and a few others, actually still have them ( I never can seem to part with anything). I got a Pattern Master last year from Cabala's and was amazed. I then ended up buying a couple more. Very even distribution of shot and kick geese out of the air further than I thought possible. I can get 80 percent of the pattern on a full sized coyote target at 50 yards. There may be others which preform as well but I never found any.
Be sure to check out the pinned post at the beginning of this forum for lots of good stuff also.

835 Mossberg,Carlson Dead Coyote choke tube and Remington Wingmaster BB'S HD...I have had a many of fox and several coyotes sent to the promise land with this outfit

Smokin-
I'm planning try my factory tubes first. If I don't get the results I want, I figure on using Pattern Master or the Dead Coyote choke tube. Just haven't made up my mind yet.

Chad-
I plan to see that 835 in action this season! We need to get together soon!!
