Hey I am just wondering about a Jagd /Cur Cross for coyotes. Does anyone know of a cross like this? And what they are working them on and if they are working?

Thought you had some. Just remembered they were jagd/walker and jagd/plott.

Got 2 little pups and my Walker/Jagd cross died at 14 and I have a coming 1 year old Jagd/plott cross. The pups are two young to be able to tell what they are doing yet and I have one of my better curs in heat right now and am trying to decide if I want to cross my male Jagd on her. I think it would make a great cross for decoy dogs but was hoping for some feed back before I do it.

I think it would make a good cross. Decoy work, trapline, or catch dog. I asked a similar question on a UK board, wondering if anyone had experience with a Jagd/Greyhound cross. No answers on that one.

Devin, if you like 'em both, give it a shot. Sounds like you have plenty of opportunity to test them.
Workman, when'd you start making calls? Shoot me a pm with prices and types. I'd like to get one and can't beat MADE IN USA by a buddy.....

Not that tough, just need to get a hand on things. We crossed a tall greyhound gyp to a short rednose pit once. Had to stack wood for him to stand and muzzle her. Once in a while, they need a little help. Tony

Devin,
I've had good luck using hay to elevate a dog. Just break off what ever size flake you need and tie the strings back around it so it dosn't come apart. It is better footing than that plastic bucket.
If you need hay, come by tomorrow.

I've heard digging a hole for her back feet to drop her rear works well. That way he's on level and she is his height.

Try it and you will find out. If you don't do it now and try it later and they work really good think about how much more time you could have been hunting them. Then again they might not work out and just wasted time and money. You will learn something either way. If both dogs that you want to breed are good at what they do give it a try. Good luck Devin.

I sure hope they have some hair cuz Deerassasin says my other pup is blind and that is all I need is a bunch of hairless blind dogs running around here.
Hmmmmm maybe the coyotes will all come in to see these freek of nature dogs and I can get some killed. Heaven knows I need all the help I can get.
Maybe I can get my ole Buddy Duane wanting one of these Hairless blind pups and he will start to talk to me agian. Hey It's real hot out there in Nevada, these dogs might just be the ticket?????
Sorry it was the heat just made me go plum crazy for a minute.
Male with hair. K
You guys are way to serious.

Well you know a blind one might come in handy. That way he would learn to use his nose better. lol And maybe hairless would be alright I would just have to get him a sweater.

Devin, I just ain't had much to say. With all Deerassasins advice, you sure don't need my help. You got any freetime in the next few weeks? I'll be done with my first cuttin, and will need a break. I'll tell you what, I'll trade you a "no account", catahoula x Cur, for a "blind hairless freak".

That trade sounds like devin is getting the short end of the stick. Just kidding. Duane you have got to be kidding you might have had a career in comedy. Help from me the one who doesn't know a D*** thing about decoy dogs or hounds. You got your first cut of hay in already. It keeps raining here or i would be doing square bales. Good luck devin when there born lets see some pics.

Can't wait to see the pics of that cross. I bet those are gonna be some hunting dogs. I might be interested in one of them. If they aren't blind of course, lol. I like the determined look on that little guys face.

Here are the females. On a scale from 1-10 for grit I would say the female is Maybe a 3 or 4 the male is off the charts. The female is used for decoying coytes and the male is used for denning coyotes and has been used on badger, the trapper that had him before me used him for coons in haystacks at turkey ranches. They will be sold for $100.

Thanks guys. I am kind of excited about getting them into the feild. I am working a Jadg/hound male right now and really like him he loves the coyotes and can take some real punishment from them and goes right back in. My purpose for this cross is just that something with a ton of prey drive like the Jagd has, but with more leg and better handle. Thanks again,Devin

Trapper2 I will make a phone call in a few. Ok guys I am getting flooded with about the same question and that is "Why did I or would I make a cross like this". The biggest reason Is Prey drive. I want the Prey drive of a Jagd but a bit bigger. With the curs they do not have the prey drive I desire. And until you have hunted a Jagd you wont understand. I don't like how the curs run out of energy after a while or when it gets hot. I want something that has FIRE under his tail to find and get a coyote not give up after the first half hour. I have never hunted with a dog with more PREY DRIVE than a Jagd Terrier and if you have let me know, because I want one. Anyway that is the biggest reason and if you would like to chat about it give me a call I would love to visit with you. Nice to talk to yesterday Trapper2 Devin 801-910-1501

I like your thinking and agree 100% on your cross decision. Like I told you, I'm very interested in one. If we can figure out how to get one to me and Kelly, we'll definately put them to good use.

That'd be cool, as I've heard of 2 from NM that want one and 2 from OK. You could get alot of calling in along the way, with the guys who are buying. I'd take you out. Tony

Is that pup in the pic of the 4 males on the right taken yet? He looks to be a little smaller than the other ones. It is the pic of them in the wood chips.

Not yet. I have 2 males spoken for so far and I was going to keep one. And I think there are 5 females spoken for and I was going to keep one of them too. So One female and one male left.

You can see in the last picture of him all the hair is rubbed off his ears from going in the hay stacks after the coons. This photo was when I first got him it has since grown back, he looks a little bit better. lol

Here is a video of the male in some action. He was held back until after the shot, we didn't want the dogs to scare off any pups that were in the area. But you can see that he uses his nose and can track game anyway, and is not afraid to grab ahold. View My Video

The Males The lighter color I think Ryan (trapper2) wants Larry I think you wanted the one on his back and Matt you can have your choice of the other 2 and I will take whatever is left. Sorry Ryan you wanted a male so the lighter male is left.

I am and am very excited about this cross. I have 2 Jagd females that are great little coyote dogs but they are that...Little and the coyotes can really put a whoopin on them. I have a Jadg/hound cross that is turning in to what I think will be an awesome coyote dog. The Female to these pups is a nice decoy dog but like most the curs I have had just lack a little something, maybe that something I find in the Jagds. I know everyone loves their curs for coyotes but I am not happy with the ones I have had (Kemmers, leopards,Cataholas,OMC)and I want something better,This may not be it but I will never know unless I try. But I can tell you these pups are going to some guys that will really be able to put them to the test.

Devin, I have run alot of curs, and of course my catahoullas, and some crosses. I understand what you are saying,"they lack something", I don't know that they "lack", but they are different.I think you are on the right track with the Jagd blood. That may fill the gap for your needs. I'll be interested to see how they turn out.

Duane, Like I said until you hunt a terrier, you will never understand. There is a prey drive in a terrier that unmatched in any other breed of dog. And who knows this may not be the ticket, but the curs are not the ticket for me either. And the Jagds are to small for the coyotes. Someday when you are over visiting your buddy Wade we need to hook up over there and go for a coyote hunt. Just don't bring him.lol

mines going to get used on coyotes, but his main deal is going to beavers if he doesnt get to big, my curs are just to big to go in the holes and dont have enough sand to stay hook to one under ground, i hope the pup from devin will work out, plus the money back, no ?s asked guarentee from devin helps too, lol. ryan

Mine will be used on coyotes and bobcat recovery. If she turns out gritty enough, I'll be using her in my breeding program.

Devin,
Are there any males left? I have one of my hunters that wants me to train a decoy dog for him, after seeing Gunner at work. He wants a male.
Thanks...Tony

Should have took Bean with me, but Taylor wanted him to stay with her while I slipped out for a couple of hours…lol Went out to make a couple stands this morning before the rain started and set in for what looks like most of the day. 1st stand I saw a pair about 600 yards out, so I eased up to within 400 yards and turned the call on low. Had to get louder than I thought to get their attention. When I did here they came on a fast lope. They got within 100 yards and the old female started to circle to get the wind. Tater was watching them and he barked them to a stop before I did. I drop the ol gal and lined up on the 2nd one and squeezed one off at a little over 200. I heard the bullet smack and then seen her getting up. Tater was on her tail and I could not shoot again. He did not get a hold of the coyote and quit the chase after about another 400-500 yards as the coyote crossed onto a place I can not hunt. He is going to loose his nutts soon if he don’t start getting ahold of them. Bean would have bayed that coyote, or still be out there chasing it. Went to my next spot and the wind shifted after my first series. I kept my good eye downwind and sure enough an old male showed up about 200 out. I popped him and called a bit more without seeing another coyote. Got them home and Taylor took a contest picture for me. My new pup Pepper got to see one last night and then these two this morning. See is barking and growing at them. So she seems to not like coyotes already. We will see come next year if she is fit to breed. Stay after them Kelly Here is a picture of Pepper. Thanks for the pup Devin. Taylor already loves her. Kelly

Went out and killed two more this evening. Pepper put a tooth into one of them. I think I will have fun with this pup. Tater done better on these two stands and I am not quite as pissed at him. He's still going to loose his nutts. Stay after them Kelly

That is great Kelly. You have already put that pup on more coyotes than I have seen in a life time. Good Job. The thing I like about this litter is they all went to some top notch hunters that can really tell if they are going to make dogs. Thanks guys.
