Palin's Future? Grandma Governor, for Now
Palin and Her Aides Reflect on failed VP Run, Consider What Comes Next

By KATE SNOW and IMTIYAZ DELAWALA
Nov. 5, 2008—

Gov. Sarah Palin paused in Arizona before heading home to Alaska today and dismissed any suggestion that her presence on the Republican ticket cost Sen. John McCain the presidency.

The McCain candidacy was crushed under the weight of the country's economic crisis, not the presence of Sarah Palin, she said.

"I don't think anybody should give Sarah Palin that much credit... that my presence on the ticket would trump the economic crisis that America found itself in a couple of months ago and attribute John McCain's loss to me," Palin said this morning in the lounge of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel.

"Now having said that, if I cost John McCain even one vote, I'm sorry about that because John McCain, I believe, is the American hero," she said. "I had believed that it was his time."

To many Republicans, Palin is not a loser and not a handicap. She is the future of the Republican Party.

Even McCain praised Palin, despite surveys like a recent ABC News poll that found 46 percent of voters said her presence on the ticket made them less likely to support McCain.

During his concession speech Tuesday night, McCain called Palin "an impressive new voice in our party for reform," and said, "We can all look forward with great interest to her future service to Alaska, the Republican Party and our country."

As she heads back to Alaska today, Palin declined to speculate about her political future four years from now.

"2012 sounds like years away. What will we be doing then? Enrolling Trig in kindergarten," Palin said of her 6-month-old son.

Palin still has two years to serve of her first term as governor of Alaska and, if she chose, she could run for a second term.

She could also aim for a U.S. Senate seat in two years if she wanted to challenge a fellow Republican. Sen. Lisa Murkowski's seat is up in 2010. Palin took on and defeated Murkowski's father, former Gov. Frank Murkowski, in Alaska's Republican gubernatorial primary in 2006 to win her current position.

But after voting in her hometown of Wasilla on Tuesday, Palin hinted that she may have a role in national politics again.

"You know if there is a role in national politics it won't be so much partisan," Palin said. "My efforts have always been here in the state of Alaska to get everybody to unite and work together to progress this state."

"It certainly would be a uniter type of role," Palin said.

"I think if she can get back to her real self, trusting her instincts, being the outsider, being willing to take on the big dogs, I think she'll do just fine and I think she'll be a player," said ABC News political consultant Torie Clarke.

But as her staffers watched the dismal returns Tuesday night and came to terms with the loss, several said they weren't so sure, worried she would be the scapegoat for the GOP's loss.

"She needs to go away for a while," said one Palin aide. Once Palin spends some time back in Alaska, out of the national spotlight, this aide said, then she can re-emerge on the national scene.

As the Barack Obama victory party in Chicago's Grant Park grew noisier Tuesday night, the party at the bar at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix was getting rowdy too.

Into the wee hours, former Palin staffers expressed regret about how Palin's campaign had been handled.

"She was under-served," said one aide, who said Palin did not deserve to step onto a national stage with so little support and guidance.

This aide was particularly disturbed by the way Palin's media appearances were handled, saying that the build-up was so big that any mistake by Palin was doomed to be judged a failure.

Several aides also said Palin was done an enormous disservice by her own staff when someone authorized the purchase of $150,000 worth of clothing for the governor and her family.

"That wasn't her," one aide said.

The clothing, much of which was never worn, will now be donated to charity, the campaign has said.

While Palin staffers were disappointed, many were also relieved to have the race over. Some have vacations planned. Most will return to jobs they ditched about two months ago, when Palin was named to the ticket.

"I'm not doing anything until January," said one Palin aide.

Palin does not have that luxury. Her job awaits back in Juneau.

And she will soon have another duty. Palin will soon be a grandmother, with her daughter Bristol due to give birth in about six weeks, on Dec. 18, according to the baby's father.

I dont want her to be a unifier. This party needs to learn that stepping across the isle just gets you punched in the mouth. Does anyone think they are going to set partisan politics aside for the next senate term. The GOP needs to get back to core beliefs, get back to the Reagan era ideals, or the dems will have 60 seats in 2 years. The first step will be republicans in both houses screaming every time someone wants to raise taxes, insert pork, or infringe on our constitutional rights, or dirty back room deals. If its going to cost the people money, we need to know about it.

She won't be a unifier ... she simply isn't smart enough. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif She has had her 15 minutes of fame and will now fade into the Alaskian sunset. Althoughn she may live on in Java's signature line ... hahha just joking. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Our paper toady had an article about the in-fighting between the McCain and Palin camps. It said "Sarah Palin wasn't aware that Africa was a contenent and she and her brood behaved like a band of Wasilla hillbillies buying Neiman Markus from coast to coast." /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

She also was unaware of NAFTA between the US, Can, and Mexico. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

She was simply unqualified to be a VP. McCain should have picked a better running mate! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

...And you believe this stuff, ECH? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Oy vay! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

BTW, I'm preparing to change my sig line now that the election is over. I just haven't been able to bring myself to do it yet (plus my work PC filters out most pics and I can't go to photobucket.com where I park my graphics stuff...). Maybe I'll change it tonight when I go home.

Do I believe it .... well reflecting more on her Katie Couric interview and her getting fooled by those Quebec radio guys, I'm afraid that it's probably true. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Although I like her views on gun control, hunting, etc... I do think that she was in way over her head when she was thrust upon the national stage. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

OK, well, why do you think she is the most popular governor in the US?

How did she expose AK Republican corruption and how did she manage to get the badly needed new pipeline project underway when no other governor since the 1970s had managed to do so?

Personally, I think the ABC and CBS interviews were 'gotcha' jobs and she was subjected to stupid questions. The elites resent her because she isn't a liberal Ivy Leaguer and doesn't fit in with theri cocktail party crowd. She is a regular middle-class person.

In regards to the pipeline, the project is not exactly underway. She moved it along a bit, but they are far from actually constructing it at this point. In fact, although the pipeline company (TransCanada) is committed, they have not received any committment from the natural gas companies to develope their fields and ship gas through it .... this is largely a result of Palin refusing to committ to future tax and royality amounts. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Very good article in the Dallas Morning Daily News on this topic on Nov 5th... sorry I can't create a link, but I'm sure you can google it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I think alot of moving the pipeline project had to do with timing and economics and not just Palin ... remember the previous Govenor had reached a deal that was considered too much of a give away. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif It will be interesting to see if the current credit situation delays this 40 billion project even further?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

IMO being Gov of Alaska with a population of only 664,000 is not much more challenging then being the mayor of a small to medium sized city. Many popular mayors would probably make lousy VPs or Pres. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You dont really believe that do you? I mean come on, I was taught that in the 5th grade. By the way its spelled "continent"

They have also mentioned that she didnt have the support of the campaign, like she should have. Her prep for those interviews was dismal at best.

I really have to admit, I am starting to have a serious problem with others that think a person needs to be super human, with all this experience and have a Harvard/Yale diploma to hold office in this country. Just simply look at where this has gotten us in the last 50 years in this country.

Common sense has long been pitched out the window. I get really tired of people saying she has no experience, she had more executive experience than BO,JB,and JM. That is fact and is undeniable but yet look who got elected with all of less than 160 days of senate experience. Yet he has run his own campaign for 21 months so that counts huh? Ohh I forgot community organizer Remember hes the one who said during the bailout crisis, "if you need me, call me. I'll be there"

The only thing "wrong" with her was her inexperience with blood sucking parasites in d.c. politics and the media. The washington crowd really doesn't want her around, and that is exactly why she needs to be there. I suspect after Stevens resigns his post for corruption charges, she will throw her hat in the ring for the senate seat. It would be the smartest thing to do. Then she can gain the ever so prized experience required by those who think its vitally important to have.

"You don't really believe that do you?" Well after seeing Mike Huckabee (while Gov of AK) get interviewed by one of our comedians (google Rick Mercer on You Tube - talking to Americans) and wish Canadians congratulations on having our national igloo ... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gifI'd say that there is a distinct possibility that Palin didn't know that Africa was a continent! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Palin is ifinately more qualified to discuss American issues than some canadian liberal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Actually Stealth 1959, I'm a Canadian (notice the capital there bud) Conservative and I was hoping that McCain / Palin would win. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That said, I'm still a realist about the situation. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My post that you quoted was partly opinion and partly a quote from the paper ... your post was merely an insult, and not a very intelligent, well thought out, or witty one at that. That bud, is a reflection on you not me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Hows come you dont ever see the liberal media play the gotcha game with their own? OH YEAH thats right because its one of their own!

Obviously the 'didn't know Africa was a continent' was BS. Notice there is no legit source cited...predictable. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

This is what cost McCain the election, reaching across the isle.

Eastcoasthunter, Crawl back under your socialist rock, the election is over.

Palin, Nugent 2012. or Gingrich in there somewhere. I like that.

Palin / Nugent in 2012 .... PLEASEEEEE, give me a break. They wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in [beeep]! What would the MSM call this ... the wack job ticket. LMAO. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Anyone who would think that this combo would be taken seriously is delusional or a Dem plant making sure that the Dems get in for 8 yrs instead of 4. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

P.S. Slick, come out from under your rock .... the lack of O2 must have caused enough damage already!HAHA /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

that's more people than Wyoming has eastcoast.
the left just can't handle people who stand up to aggression with a can of whoop ask.
they would rather loose a war than win.
you don't like Chaney or bush but at least they weren't limp wrested like carter and Clinton.
all of this middle east crap could have been avoided if I'd have been president when carter was.
Iran would have been a glass parking lot and the rest of the middle east would have been saying "yes Mr US just don't hurt me" or dead.
you just think bush was aggressive, I wanted the US to show aggression then.
when Iraq hit our ship with the missile they would have become a glass parking lot too. game over no tit for tat garbage. no hand slaps just WAR right then on the spot.
nobody in their right mind would mess with the US again.
war is he11 and we play way to nice. it should be WIN right now at all costs to the enemy collateral damage is to be expected.

Cmiddleton ... Show me where I ever said I didn't like Cheney or Bush -- that is your own false conclusion! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

What are you referring to "when Iraq hit our ship with the missile"?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif Are you trying to refer to the USS Cole, it was blown up with a explosive filled speed boat in the port of Yemin in 2000 by Al Qaeda with the help of the Gov't of Sudan and had absolutely Nothning to do with Iraq or Saddam. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Your big on "glass parking lots" and killing innocent civilians of dictators ... not real couragious of you, but how would the west get any oil from the middle east after you made it all radio active? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Hey canadian dude. You're not even qualified to drink Palin's bath water so why do you feel like you have the right to judge her or any American for that matter.

Palin has the courage to run for VP on a moments notice, and energizes the republican party when McCain couldn't. Palin has done more for this country in a few months than you have done for your in your entire life.

Saddle up your moose and head on out of here.
