Got a call about an hour ago from my son. He has spent the last 5 months in Qatar. He is in the Air Force, crew chief on the B-52, and they shipped him over to be a guard for private contractors at one of the bases in Qatar. Anyway he was calling from Baltimore, or as he said from home (meaning the USofA). He will be getting to Shreveport later this afternoon.

Its good to know he made to thru ok and I cant wait to hear his and his wifes stories when they come up in a month. His wife was in Baghdad for 6 months before he left.

Proud dad of SS Rowan (who will soon have his name on the side of a B-52).

Give the young man my THANKS for his service!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

He is certainly deserving of all of our thanks. God bless he and his wife for their service to our country!!! Glad you are getting your boy back safe and sound on US soil.

It is hard to believe the AF is still using B52s? They should have been retired 40 or more years ago. We have known how to build better bombers for about 50 years. But congress is more interested in buying welfare votes than protecting the US.

Maybe so Jack but I have witnessed first hand the effectiveness of the ancient B52's. They are still a devestating weapon when escorted into the drop zone by modern fighter jets.

Good news Grandpas Shop. Tell him thanks from all of us who are proud to be Americans.

Jack, going by what my son tells me, they are planning on getting a 100 years out of the B-52. Ya, there might be something that could be built today that could do the same job, but if it still works why change it. It is still one bad bird when its flying over, specially if you are the enemy.

Do 52's still carry the CRM-114 decoder /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif?

You are asking the wrong person.

I was ineligable to join the Armed Forces when I was 4 yrs old (Type 1 insulin dependant Diabetes). I really wanted to join, but when they ask if you have any diseases and you say Diabetes, you are thanked for wasting their time and told not to bother coming back.

Heck, when he called yesterday morning he said he was at the USO in Baltimore. All I could think of was Bob Hope. I then asked my wife last night what USO stands for. Her answer was Bob Hope. I dont even know if I was right in the SS standing for Staff Sargent, was guessing on that one.
