Wanting to rebarrel a Weatherby

I was thinking about having my .340 Weatherby to a smaller caliber. I was wondering what was the smallest size I could make it with the exsisting bolt size.

I do not know but thumbing through my reloading manual. It shows the 257 Weatherby Mag having the same rim head diameter as the 340 at .531. The 240 Weatherby has a smaller .473 head size. The overall length of the 257, 270 and 7mm Weatherbys are 2.549 inches the 340 is longer at 2.825 inches. The 300 and 340 Weatherbys have the same overall length of 2.825 inches.

Looks right to me with the 257 Weatherby Mag is the smallest without going to a wildcat.

The bolt will fit:
257 Weatherby Magnum
6.5mm Remington Magnum
264 Winchester Magnum
270 Weatherby Magnum
7mm Remington Magnum
7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum
7mm Weatherby Magnum
7mm STW
7mm Remington Ultra Magnum
300 Ruger Compact Magnum
300 H&H Magnum
300 Winchester Magnum
300 Weatherby Magnum
300 Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum
300 Remington Ultra Magnum
308 Norma Mag
8mm Remington Magnum
338 Ruger Compact Magnum
338 Winchester Magnum
338 Remington Ultra Magnum
340 Weatherby Magnum
350 Remington Magnum
358 Norma Magnum
375 Remington Ultra Magnum
375 H&H Magnum
375 Ruger
416 Remington Magnum
458 Winchester
450 Marlin
458 Lott

Thanks guys! That is the exactly what I was looking for. I had a 270 Weatherby Mag. at one time and it was one heck of a deer gun. I just picked up a custom Remington 25-06 that I will be using most of the time to get away from the heavy recoil of the .340. I thought of selling the gun to somebody who hunts in the west and could use a large caliber. It is a Mark V SLS that isn't made anymore so I hate to get rid of it but I might.

If you liked the 270 Weatherby mag that would be a good candidate along with any of the 300 mags. The 257 Weatherby though a great cartridge is pretty close to your 25-06. I like the big bores and the 340 is a great Western Elk cartridge. Good luck no matter which way you go.
