Some cool polls for you guys - see what everybody likes and hates - 08/25/14 07:34 AM

What's hot, and what's not!!

I am doing some polls to find out the trends and preferences in handloading.

It is only covering the popular, major manufacturers... companies that you would be able to buy through common outlets, like your local "Gun shoppe" or major mail order outlets like MidwayUSA

It will not cover companies like CH4D or Harrells (although CH4D is one of my favorites), or narrow spectrum specialty companies like Dillon.

And I have misgivings about including Lee, because they are not in the same category as the other companies.
It's like doing a poll on Toyota, Audi, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan...

... and Yugo. But since Lee is sold through most mail order dealers, I put Lee in the poll.

You have to answer the question to see the results. When you enter the answer to one poll, the page reappears so you can see that answer, and then answer the next question.

Some of the questions allow only one choice, and some multiple choices.

It runs until Saturday night at 11 PM

Thanks guys - this might actually make a difference, because I am going to present the results in a report that I am preparing to a major USA manufacturer.

There is no bias - the companies are listed in alphabetical order.

I wish you would have included Berger, and Nosler in your list of reloading manuals.

The only problem I see (if you want to call it that) is that your answers are going to be influenced by folks that have only owned 1 of the choices. If a person always uses RCBS and has never used Redding or Lee, he would obviously vote for RCBS because he has no experience with anything else.

I don't know how you would fix that, though ...... huh

Or ....... is that what you are trying to find out?

And the Hornady manual. That's three of the best five printed resources left off the list.

In that situation I abstained. For instance, I've only used the RCBS electronic scale, so to me it's the best...and worst. I didn't vote on a couple others for the same reason.

I think if you dont have enough experience to truly have an opinion on one of the questions you just shouldn't submit an answer for that question. It doesn't say anywhere you have to answer them all.

I left three unanswered.

I forgot Nosler - my badd, and it is not possible to edit the polls once you hit "enter".

I would NOT include Berger, as it is not widely distributed, and Berger bullets are used by a very small segment of the shooting population..

There is some logic to that on the surface... but, people these days do a lot of research on the net, and usually have one or more friends that advise them - so they might not have used everything, there is weight to their opinion.

If you limit the poll to people that have used it all - you will get three answers.

So far, the results are reflecting other sources I have access to.

Sorry for leaving out one or two things - I can't tell you how much time it took to get this one done (after two other efforts that were deleted))... the poll program is very user unfriendly.

This last one (after getting training on the first two) took almost an hour and a half to get right.

Re: Some cool polls for you guys - see what everybody likes and hates - 08/25/14 08:43 PM

I am already seeing some surprising results. Who would have thought the folks who have brought out 49 reloading manuals about twice as many as the rest would have received as many votes for worst manual??? confused Hodgdon has to be doing so well in the polling due to their excellent website manual I am guessing.
Just to give Nosler some love I have never cared much for their manuals until this recent one came out and it has quickly become one of my favorites.

Regardless of the problems setting up this poll, thank you for your time and effort, it is very educational and makes me glad that I listened to me dear old dad in the early years, you would have liked him!!!

Lookie... there are a tons of die makers, and people will always want to know why I left out some die maker in Pennsylvania, who works at the post office during the week, but makes outstanding, winning benchrest dies on Sunday, after he gets back from church.

There is a company that makes individual loading manuals for each caliber.

I got a PM and was chastised because I didn't include Harrells power measures. Gee, they make a whopping 5 a week.

My God, man where and when does it stop.

I Love CH - I have their HUMONGOUS 30 pound single station press as my main press (it will crush RockChucker like a ball of aluminum foil)...

... and I have their monster 4 station "H" press for loading at the range - but CH doesn't even advertise anywhere and 99 percent of shooters never heard of them... so they would show up at the bottom of the poll, when they do not deserve to be at the bottom... and then people would avoid them cuz...

"... and I didn't get a CH press cuz I saw this poll on PM and they came out at the bottom of the press and dies sections".

See what I'm talking about - when you design a poll, you have responsibility to the makers not to skew that data in any way that is unfair.

No poll can include everything.

First, it would take three weeks to set up the poll... and second, there would be so many choices that no one would complete it.

I love Hornady's answering machine... it is the funniest one I have ever heard. They are a good crew too.

Nice thing about them is that even though it is a family business, the kids don't walk into a management position - if they want to work for the company, they start by loading trucks, and get promoted only if they earn it... non-family workers can be promoted over family if they deserve it.

This answers questions I had as well, thanks.
A couple of my votes were based more on internet info. (mostly, if not 100% from PM`s, and some of the guys that over the years a person learns who has the first hand experience/years of experience).
A couple I could not answer; I find my Lyman Electronic Powder Disp. to work very well, and could not really pick a WORST load data/manual).
Funny, I pick Lee dies as one of the worst, yet also the best, due to price point/value.

ETA- Lee...the YUGO of reloading equipment? huh

Re: Some cool polls for you guys - see what everybody likes and hates - 08/30/14 10:21 PM

I have a soft spot for Lee equipment. It is what got me started and has gotten tons of others started as well. Their equipment is cleverly designed and if not as precise as others, it makes plenty fine hunting ammo. There really isn't any comparison between my first Lee press and my Redding UltraMag, but I still have the little red rascal on my bench for depriming and such. All biases aside, their mechanical powder measure will drop loads as accurately as any out there.

I agree 100% with this and the previous info about Lee. I got started with 90% of my equipment being lee that was . I have upgraded a few items that I think are more precise. I also use a perfect powder measurer and it is amazing for the price. Only issue I have is the graduations are not accurate. Having said that, 5 mins to get it set and it throws perfect charges almost every time. 20$ for it can't be beat. I also love the automatic primer that goes along with their presses. I love it's ease and it's one of the reasons I still use their press.

Re: Some cool polls for you guys - see what everybody likes and hates - 09/04/14 04:09 PM

I started reloading several years ago with a Lee single stage press and Lee dies and as yet have had zero problems with any of their equipment. The Lee powder thrower works great and will be hard to beat for the money. I bought a set of Lee dies that didn't have the shell holder, gave a call and had it in two days. Great CS. I bought a 3 die set of Forster dies for a 6BR and have had nothing but trouble from them. Sent them back along with a check for $30 something bucks, returned in same condition so their CS IMO sucks big time. Other folks sing their praises. I learned long ago that you don't always have to spend the big bucks to get serviceable equipment. If and when my press goes south I'll possibly go with an RCBS but so far I'm fine with my Lee stuff. I use the RCBS 1010 scale and love it. Due to my experience with Forster they will never see another penny of my money.

With you on the Lee equipment. I was into reloading many years ago. Started with an RCBS Jr. And moved up to a Rockchucker. About 5 years ago I flirted with reloading again and started with a low end Lee kit. At first glance, the expanse of plastic made it seem too cheap. After using it for a while and picking up some newer/"better" bits and pieces I developed a new impression of Lee's equipment.

I now use Forster, Redding, Hornady, and RCBS bottleneck dies, but most of my handgun dies are still Lee. The Lee scale is as accurate as my 1010. The powder measure is more consistent than my Uniflow, and the classic (iron) press is as strong and precise as I remember my old Rockchucker being. The on press priming system works better than any of my RCBS equipment did. A lot of it is still plastic and what is still feels ( and costs) too cheap to be any good. That said, for me it just flat works. Others can flame away, but that's what matters. tt2 thumbup1

Locking the thread shouldn't have to be necessary. There's good info here and some discussion about it could still be beneficial, especially to new members. If it was important enough to be pinned that hasn't changed. Why punish the rest of the membership because of useless crap being spewed by some? Delete the useless posts (including this discussion) and leave the data open for future reference and CIVIL and CREATIVE discussions.

Good for you, but obviously there's more than a few folks, according to the polls, who can't make that same statement. rolleyes

There really weren't any surprises in those polls to me based on personal experience and info from others when I was first getting into reloading a few years ago and I looked for a lot of info and opinions back then.

Re: Some cool polls for you guys - see what everybody likes and hates - 05/13/15 11:32 AM

This poll is skewed and biased. Your opening comments are negative towards lee comparing them to a Yugo and having misgivings about including them. Every person who participated in this poll read those comments first. How can that not affect the outcome?

I didn't participate in the poll and I have no stock in Lee. I own reloading equipment from all the manufacturers named and many not named. A good question might have been: "Which manufacturer provides the best value for price?".

Was this poll solicited by a manufacturer or did you just decide they need the info?

Sooner or latter I got a chance to try most things or order replacement parts even if it was something I didn't load for. Your survey results do not track my findings.

If it was rcbs it would not have broke and if it did, the replacement would be free of charge. I also hate the Lee resizing die deprimer rod lock setup.....always slipping.

Man,There are a bunch of Lee haters on this forum. There is reloading equipment from every mfg. that doesn't make the grade, and yes,Lee has a few duds. Their standard reloading dies will run neck to neck with any other brand with ammo accuracy.
Over the past 37 years,I've bought and used products from every reloading equipment mfg.. Some worked good, some didn't. I've got a rainbow of colors in my reloading arsenal, and I'm not worried about a poll that has a great deal of bias included in it.

The lee aluminum cam links break all the time they will replace for free. You can do it on line send them a picture of the broken part but it will just break again.I have broken 2 sets and now use one from a lee turret press someone gave me.What they should do is give us an updated steel part.I will ask them and see what happens.

I bought 204 ruger Lee Redding die I use the Redding back up. The only trouble I hade lately on 280 I full length size brass. The bullet would slip right in. I call they said to use sand.

Paper on 280 pin to get it to work right. I sent them a email back and said if u can't send me a new 280 pin I will box all my Lee die up and send them back to buy rcbs die. 2 days later i had a new pin. I did trade for a rcbs 280 rem die set. I always keep a extra die set for each cal. Lee has done me ok but not as good as RCBS.

I lucked out as a kid, my Dad would stumble on deals here and there, when I was 13 or so he won a Mec 650 in 12 gauge in a card game.. I still have it..He also acquired a Rock Chucker press with three huge boxes all kinds of items, I reloaded for two years for my .222 with out having to buy anything!!
That said I don't have a Lee press, but I do know that a lot of people got started with Lee products, and the Company should be proud of that.
I do have a few Lee "do Dads" that are real handy, for instance I absolutely love my Lee crimp die in .223.
I also would not be without a Lee decapping die, when you have a five gallon pail of Mil brass with crimped primers to remove, the decapping die is the ticket. I leave it in my Rock Chucker and use for other calibers, and how can you beat the price of the crimp and decapping dies???

I respect everyone's opinion here, but I have to disagree. I have used Lee products for over 30 years. Their dies have never let me down. I have had some issues with a few of their products, but all in all they work fine for me. I'm no competition benchrest shooter. Just a hunter and recreational shooter. Obviously I'm not trying to say Lee is the best. That wouldn't be true. Their dies, presses, and other equipment can give good value for the money for the guy that can't afford the high end equipment. That's all. If other brands work better for your application, then more power to you.

If lee dies are so bad, then why is there so many people recommending the carbide pistol dies over rcbs nitrite dies. Why does so many recommend the lee crimp dies. I hear nothing but good about lee dies. I think your pole is a little bias, because so many think the least you can buy with the most money is always the best, and thats not always true. I do know I really like my hornady lock n load single stage press alot. With my rcbs nitride dies. And my lee factory crimp dies. Dave

RCBS is a great company. Best customer service I've ever dealt with.

Wondering about why you might need a special die to decap case's, mil or other wise? I have nothing against Lee. Got a few dies from them and they work but could use a better lock ring; easy fix! Got my son a Lee starter kit years ago, didn't like the scale at all but just no big thing. Other's do like it! The thing about most Lee tools and the best from anyone else is they do the same job for a lot less money. My favorite dies are Redding. I like the way they look, hate the price. Most my dies are RCBS, few Lyman, few Lee and bunch of old Herter's. They all do what they were designed to do! Amazing!

you dont "need" a special die for decapping...

however a universal decapping die is great for just punching primers out before tumbling - especially for those of us who wet tumble. that way the pins and cleaning solution can scrub that carbon out of the primer pocket for you.

and since its just an open body die with a decap pin in there.... you can run dirty brass through it without worrying about scratching up your sizing die body with a piece of grit.

I have a few Lee collet dies, not enough to condemn them. And over the years I have seen lots of post's like this from people that love their Lee stuff and have had success with it. I think Lee's problem is they try to be different and then it's a matter of getting used to one thing or another they do. The lock rings on my Lee dies I hate but, simple to remove them and replace. /all my Lee die's, two or three set's, have very old Herter lock rings on them and no more problem. I have Lee sizing dies for my cast bullet's. Also have a Lyman 450. The 450 is better looking, good cool factor but the Lee set up does pretty much the same thing!

Most my dies are RCBS and I haven't one bad thing to say about them, they just work! My favorite are my Redding but they work the same as my other dies! Look better though. Speaking of looks, got a new set of Lyman dies and like the way they look. They work no worse or better than any of my other dies! Haven't used my old Herter dies in over 30 yrs but would bet they still work right! Something I think about different brands is a lot of us get caught up with a favorite maker for one reason or another and never realize they all do pretty much the same thing and if they are different in some way, like those junk lock rings on the Lee dies, easy fix but many of up prefer to talk them down, good bad or indifferent!
